Obituary of Gary Shewfelt

On Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at the age of 80, Gary was finally set free from the devastating grip of Alzheimer’s disease—a cruel illness that slowly stole his livelihood and much of the vibrant life he once lived. Though the disease took from him gradually, it never erased the love he gave or the impact he made on those lucky enough to know him.  Beloved son of the late Alfred and late Jean (late Cliff). Gary was especially close to his mom. He had a lot of respect for her and always made an effort to stay connected. Brother of Terry (late Donna), Brad (Terry), and the late Wayne. Gary will be fondly remembered by Muriel Shewfelt.

Gary and his twin brother Terry (late Donna) were seldom apart for most of their lives. A part of Terry is gone with him, as their bond was one of shared lives, loyalty, and brotherly love.  A bond so strong, Donna used to joke that it was like being married to both of them—and she meant it with nothing but affection and respect, as she had the deepest love for Gary.

With no children of his own, he was like a second father to Terry’s children, Terry (Sarah) and Trisha Daynard (Travis): a steady presence, full of quiet support, gentle humour, and unwavering love. The love we felt from him was constant and profound. He was so much more to them than an Uncle.

Gary always held a special place in his heart for his niece Tanya and nephews Greg and the late Curtis. He was a proud great uncle to Abby, Colton, Rebecca and Josh.

Gary was a farmer at heart—strong, capable, and always willing to put in the hard work. He lived on and worked the family farm on Neebish Road for most of his life. Gary was always one to “give a hands turn” and often the first to step up when someone needed help. Gary purchased a cattle truck and began delivering livestock for local farmers in the community and surrounding areas. He had a deep love for animals and a gentle way with them, always treating them with kindness and respect.

From a young age, Gary enjoyed working in the bush—cutting logs, hauling firewood, and cutting lumber on the sawmill. He started out alongside a team of horses, and as the years went on, he transitioned to working with tractors but never lost his appreciation for the old ways.

He later built a reputation as one of the best heavy equipment operators in the area. Some of his jobs are still talked about to this day—a testament to his precision, pride in his work, and natural skill. He was a proud member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 793.

In his younger years, Gary was rough and tough in the best ways—playing hockey, baseball, and broomball with determination and grit. He lived fully, worked hard and was always true to himself, bringing that same spirit to everything he did.

Though Gary is now at peace, we remain here with the memories, the love, and the ache of his absence. His presence shaped us—and that will never be forgotten.

Friends and family are invited to attend a Graveside Service at Port Findlay Cemetery (243 Hardwood Drive, Desbarats, ON) on Wednesday, June 18, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Mr. Tom Headrick officiating.
