Harry Baker

Obituary of Harry Allen Baker

Passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Sault Area Hospital on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at the age of 74. Cherished husband and best friend of Patricia (nee Cumming). Loved father of Erin Baker (Amanda), Matthew Baker (Shannon) and the late Melanie Baker. Proud grandfather of Cody, Owen and Melanie. Son of the late Franklin Charles Baker and the late Evelyn Fraser Chamberlin of Poltimore, Quebec. Brother of Bruce Baker (Denise) of Tiny Township, ON and the late Reid Baker. Brother-in-law of Larry Cumming (Donna) and their daughter Brett Hartley. Uncle of Emily Naylor (Ben) and Yves (Melissa). Great uncle of Glyn, Kieran and Landon.

Harry loved to fish and spent valued times on the water or on the ice and always came home with a catch. He loved the socialization with friends and family, especially his boys and grandchildren. He enjoyed the feast after the catch too! He loved his camp at Pinecrest in Thessalon. He couldn’t get enough of it, as he would putter, fix and sometimes just sit and cogitate the days away. His deck and back yard at home were his other favourite places. Harry enjoyed his BBQ and taking just the right time to cook the meat. In fact, up until just recently, he did most of the cooking, a great relief for Patricia!

Harry retired after a long career with the Local 800 Plumbers and Pipefitters Union in 2014. His last big job was working on the construction of the new Sault Area Hospital, a four-year commitment. He worked across Canada as an industrial pipefitter and Foreman including Fort McMurray, Red Deer, Sarnia and Windsor. He loved to tell stories and have a good laugh. When Patricia was still working, she would save up her stat holidays to have a long stretch off and fly out to where Harry was working and see Canada.

At Harry’s request, a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the SAH Cancer Care Fund or the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) would be greatly appreciated.

We would like to acknowledge the exceptional care given to Harry by the dedicated staff of 3A and 3B at the Sault Area Hospital, as well as the team of physicians in palliative care, they all went into health care for the right reasons…to help others. Thank you.

Fly high Harry, you have earned that freedom of peace, dignity and comfort.

As Harry would say to others who depart: “Here’s to a duck that swam in a lake and never lost a feather. May this time another year, we’ll all be together! Turn me loose, I’ll never be the same!”
