Esther Huber

Obituary of Esther Huber

At the age of 98, our beautiful Esther — beloved “Mutti” and “Omi” — passed away peacefully with her family at her side, at the Sault Area Hospital on Monday, October 20, 2025, after a brief illness.

She is now reunited with her dearly missed and only son, Herbert “Herb” Huber, who predeceased her in April. Esther is survived by her devoted husband Artur, and her loving children Dagmar Scholten (late Richard), Doris Christensen (Niels), daughter-in-law Linda (late Herb), and Helen Pereira (Fern). Proud and cherished Omi of Matt (Pina), Scott (Kaitlyn), Dawn (Adam), Diane, Stephanie, late Stephen, Erik, Evan (Andrea), Emily (Matt), James (Jessie), and Rachel, and “Tik-Tok” (Uhr) Omi to Lyla, Lilliana, Maverick, Olivia, Luca, Miles, Leo, Cole, Logan, Hunter, and Elijah. Predeceased by her parents Heinrich and Berta Dietrich and by her siblings Irmgard (Walter), Ruth (Josef) of Germany and Gerhard (Elsa). She is also remembered by her sister-in-law Ruth Fritz (late Siegfried) of Germany. She will be deeply missed by her nieces and nephews: Gisela (Marcello), late Gudrun (late Harold), late Helga, Hans-Eric (Uschi), Walter (Ilse), Eberhard (Kirsten), Connie (late Klaus) — all of Germany — and Linda (Gary), James (Julie), and late Donald of Ontario.

Esther was a woman of remarkable strength and spirit. Together with her husband, Artur, she managed a busy farm in Pembroke, Ontario while raising four young children. During her long life, she tended her thriving vegetable and flower gardens, baked fruit pies and German torten well into her later years. She embodied self-sufficiency, grace, and quiet determination.

A talented homemaker and imaginative soul she loved cooking, baking, sewing, knitting, gardening - creating a home filled with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of home-cooked meals. Every holiday at the Huber home was a celebration of family, food, and abundance.

Always eager to learn, Esther took up swimming at 50, and at 95 mastered the iPad, FaceTime, and the internet. She loved cross-country skiing, biking, and highly competitive Rummikub games. She took great joy in music and played the piano, organ, and guitar beautifully.

The summer of 2025 was rich with her favourite places - Pointe des Chenes, the beaches of Lake Superior, the side roads of St. Joseph Island and the paths of Bellevue Park. She enjoyed family gatherings at Sand Bay, including a paddle boat ride with her grandson-in-law at 98!

Fiercely independent, endlessly creative, and full of quiet strength, Esther lived a long and beautiful life — one marked by faith, resilience, and a deep appreciation for nature and family.

Special thanks to Drs. Jarrett, Roberts, Law, the amazing nurses on 3C, Bert her ward companion and all the hospital staff who brought care and comfort to her final days. Dr. Bonder and previously Dr. Avery kept her healthy through her long life. The pharmacy team and the diabetic clinic at the Group Health Centre provided support above and beyond. Our sincere gratitude to the staff at Chartwell’s Collegiate Heights for their compassion and assistance at this difficult time and enriching her life these past two years.
