Obituary of Elizabeth Merrett
It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of our sister, Betty. She was born June 9, 1958 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON and passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Sunday, October 19, 2025 at the age of 67.
Betty is now reunited with her loving parents, Thomas and Lois Merrett, her grandmother Hazel Lundy (Thomas) and our beloved family dogs as well as many wonderful aunts and uncles. She is survived by and will be forever missed by her sisters Barbara Merrett-Fill (Lyle) and Susan Merrett-Jobst (Paul). Betty wholeheartedly cherished her many nieces and nephews and their children: Chris Fill (Caleigh), Helena, Lauren Perreault (Kurt), Jade, Asha, Theron & Odin, Kurtis Jobst, Wesley, Sarah Mageron (Mike), Wyatt, Russell, Everett, Kristen Jobst and many cousins.
Betty’s story is one of tremendous courage and kindness. Although she could not see with her eyes, she lived her life devoted to a vision much brighter than eyesight. She possessed a true vision that allowed her inner world to shape a clear journey rooted in thoughtful kindness towards others all her life. Betty’s story taught us that courage comes in many forms and that happiness can be chosen. She saw with her heart and inspired those who were fortunate enough to cross her path to feel as though they matter! Family and friends held such a significant priority to Betty. She had a unique, comforting way of making you know you were truly valued. Sharing time with loved ones was pivotal in her dedication to creating a meaningful life.
Betty was a great athlete in her lifetime, earning numerous gold medals across every event she competed in. In her youth she shone in the Olympic games for the physically disabled. In her later years, she would walk miles for a ‘friend in need’.
Betty was a passionate lifelong sports fan. She faithfully followed the Detroit Tigers, Boston Bruins and our Soo Greyhounds all of her life. To honour her, friends will gather at the GFL Memorial Gardens at an upcoming hockey game to celebrate her life in a way she would appreciate.
A graveside service will take place at New Greenwood Cemetery on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to gather together afterwards at Susan’s house, in gratitude to celebrate Betty’s life that she shared with each of us. Memorial donations to the CNIB or the charity of your choice would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
Betty, you gave the world your best and it was beautiful!!
