Obituary of Lawrence Gilbert Jago
(April 18, 1931 - November 22, 2025)
Larry had a good, long and healthy life. He died peacefully at the FJ Davey Home, in his sleep, the way he always said he would.
He is predeceased by his parents, John and Pearl Jago, and his brother Jack. Larry is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lorraine, and his daughters, Laurie Jago, Jo-Anne Slumskie (Dan) and Terri Jago (Jim Falconer), his grandchildren, Adam Slumskie (Marla), Riley McKerrow (Steve), Sarah Falconer (Jason) and Jenn Robbins (Doug), as well as his great grandchildren Grace and Leo Slumskie and Chase and Emily Robbins.
Larry was born in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay) but lived most of his 94 years in Sault Ste Marie. It’s where he met and married Lorraine and where he worked as an arborist then transit manager for the City of Sault Ste Marie until his retirement. He enjoyed many years in the business of growing and selling Christmas trees. Lorraine introduced him to his beloved Big Basswood Lake in 1957 and Larry spent as much time as he could there. His lasting legacy will be that he instilled his love of camp in his entire family, all of whom now enjoy their own camps right near his on Basswood Lake. His proudest accomplishment was his close-knit family. He loved all things Canadian history. He was a quiet, gentle man who enjoyed outdoor life to the fullest, whether it was fishing, hunting, trapping, walking in nature or cross-country skiing. He was a true outdoorsman who also enjoyed travelling with Lorraine through all of Canada, parts of Europe, Australia, New Zealand and a small part of the Caribbean.
Larry’s spirit will forever be felt in the quiet of the woods, the calm of the lake, and the hearts of those who loved him.
Larry’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Laura and the entire staff of Driftwood 3 at the Davey Home. They took such good care of him and we are very grateful.
In keeping with Larry’s wishes, there will be no service. Donations to the FJ Davey Home, the Sault Ste Marie Humane Society or a charity of your choice in his memory would be very much appreciated by his family. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
