Obituary of Shirley McBurney
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Shirley at the age of 90, a beloved mother, supportive grandmother, and cherished friend, who left this world surrounded by the love of her family.
Shirley was the embodiment of kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith. Her gentle spirit and open heart touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. Whether through a warm smile, a thoughtful word, or a quiet act of service, Shirley lived a life rooted in love, compassion, and grace. She was a pillar of strength and warmth, and her presence brought comfort and peace to everyone around her.
Predeceased by her devoted husband, James Raymond McBurney, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, laughter, and partnership for 59 years. Together, they built a beautiful life centered on family and faith.
Shirley's greatest joy was her family, and she leaves behind a legacy of love in her children: Mark, Shawn (Carole), Michael (Céline), James (Amanda), Jason (Stacy), and Catherine (Matthew). She took immense pride in the lives they built and the people they became, always offering encouragement, wisdom, and unconditional love.
She was a cherished grandmother to Cody, Brandon Mikaela, Aidan, Alec, Olivia, and Ava, who brought light and laughter to her days. Her love for them knew no bounds, and her memory will forever live on in their hearts and stories.
Lovingly remembered by her brothers Don Gray (May), Merle Gray (Maye), and the late Glen Gray (June). Dear sister-in-law of the late Maxine and Cliff Cochrane, the late Lucille and Lorne Greenwood, and William McBurney. She will be deeply missed by her many nieces, nephews and dear old friends.
Shirley's life was one of quiet strength and deep faith. She found beauty in the simple things, joy in serving others, and peace in prayer. Her home was a sanctuary of warmth and hospitality, where everyone was welcomed and loved.
She will be deeply missed by all who knew her, but her spirit will continue to guide and inspire those who were fortunate enough to be part of her life.
The family extends a special thank you to Dr. N. Apostle and Dr. S. Buehner for their compassionate care and support during Shirley's final weeks. The family extends their deepest gratitude to all the staff and volunteers at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH). Their unwavering kindness, gentle care, and genuine compassion brought comfort not only to Shirley but to all of the family. They created a space filled with dignity, peace, and support. Though our hearts are broken, we are comforted knowing that mom spent her final days in the care of such exceptional people. We remain forever grateful. Heartfelt gratitude to the dear friends and relatives who visited and offered companionship to our mother in her final days. Your love brought comfort and warmth when it was needed most. Thank you to Dr. M. Singh and Emergency Dr. Smith and Dr. Johns for your care over the years. A huge appreciation to Clayton for his support and advice over the years at The Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy.
A private service and interment has been held in accordance with Shirley's wishes. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to ARCH (https://www.archhospice.ca/donate) in Shirley's name and in honour of her life. An act of kindness she would have truly appreciated.
May she rest in eternal peace, reunited with her beloved Jimmy, and may her legacy of love, faith, and kindness live on through us all.
