Obituary of Pierre Verhelst
“Mooz ayn way wayd”
Pierre passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at the age of 70.
He was a devoted family man and loving husband to Kathy McKee, with whom he shared nearly 40 years of marriage. Proud father of Tyler (Courteney), Marissa (Evan), and Michelle (Rob). Cherished Grandpa of Nora and Levi, and “Grandpaw” of Winston and Hudson. He is now happily reunited with his beloved fur-daughter Ruby Ann Poopalot.
No one could capture the life of Pierre quite like Pierre himself.
Pierre retired as an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. A founding member of the Canadian Bushplane Heritage Centre, his passion for aviation history was evident in the restoration of the Bell 47 D1 helicopter, which remains proudly on display. Pierre filled the role of aviation historian, not just for the Bushplane Museum, but to the benefit of Canadian bush flying history in general. In recent years especially, his research revealed facts that had gone unanswered for decades. When he set his mind to finding the truth, no matter where it was to be found, he was always successful.
Pierre was deeply proud of his Francophone and Indigenous roots. His return to school later in life at Shingwauk University reflected his commitment to continuous learning and to his culture. He was also a passionate advocate for the working class, serving as an OPSEU activist and long-time president of Local 605. Often quiet, when Pierre spoke, it mattered.
During his more than ten years of retirement, Pierre pursued many interests. He was active with the Sault Ste. Marie Legal Clinic, Gold Wing Road Riders Association, the Algoma Amateur Radio Club, and was also a devoted Soo Greyhounds fan. While he will be missed by many, he will be especially missed by the neighbourhood dogs.
There will be no funeral service, but future celebrations of Pierre’s life will be shared when available. In lieu of donations, the family asks you to share a “Pierre” story or reminisce of a memory shaped by knowing him. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
Repose en paix. Baamaapii.
