Obituary of Marie Frances Caputo
“When life writes “Ended,” the angels write “Begun.”
Peacefully passed away at Sault Area Hospital on Thursday, January 15, 2026, in her 93rd year.
Marie was born in Blackburn, England and moved to the Sault at the age of 14. She met her beloved husband, Joseph (Joe), at a church picnic, and they lovingly shared more than 71 years of marriage.
She will be deeply missed by her five children and their spouses: Gregory, Kevin (Anita), Janice Nocita (Sam), Paul, and Cathie Myers (Gary).
Nana Marie was cherished and deeply loved by her grandchildren Justin Nocita (Wendy), Sarah Vilaca (Dave), Aaron Nocita (Jamina), Brianna Carlson (Josh), Jennifer (Anthony Conte), Michelle (Arianna Cameron), Colin Myers (Kellianne), and Adria Giles (Steve Brown).
Great Grandmother of Nicholas Nocita, John Nocita (Emma), Ella and Jack Vilaca, Raphael and Liam Nocita, Elliott, Joanna and Olivia Carlson, Emma and William Conte.
Predeceased by her parents John and Frances Brothers and her father-in-law and mother-in-law Eugene (Jim) Caputo (and Ben Pilgrim) and Frances Fera, brother Bernard Brothers (Olwyn), and brother-in-law James Caputo. Dear sister-in-law of Frank Caputo (Linda). She will be fondly remembered as a special aunt to nieces and nephews.
Marie was an inspiration to her family and friends. Her light shone in all she did - whether during her years working as a registered nurse at the General Hospital, later serving as a social worker with the Children’s Aid Society, or through her volunteer work with Christmas Cheer and the Soup Kitchen. If you had a need, your name would be on her prayer list; she read her Bible daily, and her life was a clear reflection of her faith.
Family and friends fondly remember the many cherished memories made together at Sunnyside Beach. Marie, an Englishwoman by birth, mastered Italian cooking, while still delighting everyone with a traditional English roast beef dinner complete with Yorkshire pudding, homemade bread and baking. Her home was always beautifully decorated and spotless, reflecting her care and attention to detail. She took great joy in hosting and entertaining, welcoming all with warmth and generosity. She will be deeply missed by her family and by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Friends and family are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at St. Gerard Majella Church (211 Pentagon Blvd.) on Tuesday, January 20, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Rex Lumine officiating. A reception will follow in the church hall. Inurnment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Columbarium at a later date.
For medical reasons affecting a family member, cell phones, smart watches, and other electronic devices will not be permitted inside the church. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation.
In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates memorial donations to a charity of your choice or one of Marie’s favorites, the Sault Ste. Marie Soup Kitchen.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Collegiate Heights and all of the doctors, nurses, and staff who cared for her at Sault Area Hospital and the Group Health Centre.
Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
