Obituary of James Edward Egan

We are heartbroken to announce the sudden passing of Jim, a beloved partner, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Devoted husband and best friend of Cathy McCullough for 32 wonderful years. Loving father of Chris McCullough and Caitlin Castellani (Lucas). He took immense pride in being Grandpa to Hudson, Lucy, and Oliver Castellani, and Rowan McCullough. He cherished every moment spent with them at the rink, building Legos, or during our regular Sunday dinners.

Jim was the son of the late James and Jackie. Special son-in-law to Rita Hammond. Cherished brother of Michele Callahan (Armand), Kim Brescacin (Frank), and Pat Egan (Joanne). Brother-in-law of Jim Hammond (Lesley), Ann Marie Hammond (Jamie Mandolesi), late Lori Davies (Phil) and Kevin Hammond. Jim had numerous nieces and nephews who adored him and with whom he shared much laughter.

He loved spending summers at Upper Island Lake searching for northern lights and loons. His Tuesdays were reserved for his cherished coffee crew. His friendship and mentorship from Jim Evans and James Wishon helped develop his love for photography. His travels and passion for photography brought him immense joy, especially capturing special moments with his camera and sharing his birdwatching adventures.

He flourished in sports photography starting with the Soo Thunderbirds. He then served as the official Soo Greyhound photographer for over a decade, showcasing his love of hockey and passion for capturing great moments.

A proud member of the Sault Ste Marie Police Department for 40 years, Jim dedicated his life to serving his community before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. He was awarded the Police Exemplary Service Medal with first bar for his long and distinguished service. Our family was touched to hear the police station flags were lowered in his honour.

Family and friends are invited to visit at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Thursday, February 26, 2026 from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gerard Majella Church on Friday, February 27, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. with Father Charles Abiamiri officiating. A reception will follow in the Church Hall.

In memory of Jim, we invite you to honor his spirit by performing a good deed. Whether it’s shoveling a driveway, paying for someone’s drive-through order, or simply making someone smile, let us keep his legacy of kindness alive. You may consider making a donation to KidSport Sault Ste Marie in his honour https://kidsportcanada.ca/ontario/sault-ste-marie/donate/

Jim will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
