Lawrence Campbell

Obituary of Lawrence Campbell

We are saddened to announce the passing of Lawrence, on Monday, March 23, 2026, nine days shy of his 97th birthday. He was surrounded by his beloved wife of 75 years and his family. Lawrence will be remembered for his quiet strength, dependability, and warm sense of humour. He was a man of character and integrity, a true gentleman.

Lawrence grew up in a devoted Christian family on St. Joseph Island, living next door to his future wife, Catherine Hadden. Rooted in their shared Christian faith, they went on to build a life together in Catherine’s childhood farmhouse and later in Sault Ste. Marie. Their farm and Island community remained a meaningful part of their lives, and it was in their home on Moluch Street that they raised three children and made close friends with new neighbours who became like family.

Lawrence was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and so much more to those who knew him. Beloved husband of Catherine for over 75 years. Dear father of late Holly Davis (Ross), late Clair (Sandy Irwin), and Alex (Kathy). Grandfather of Martin Davis (Judit), Jeremy Davis (Bryanne), Karli Campbell Dionisi (Mitchell), and Michael (Brianna Niro). Great-grandfather of Lincoln, Ivory, Owen, Peyton, Weston, and was looking forward to welcoming a sixth great-grandchild this summer.

Lawrence was born in Richard’s Landing on April 1, 1929. The youngest of his family, having survived his siblings Joe (Louise), Jack (Jean), Ella Boyle (Jack), Frank (Dorothy), Bill (Italy, 1944), Edna Dixon (Donald), Douglas (Gerry) and siblings who died as infants, Louis, Roy, Doras. Lawrence also survived his brothers- and sisters-in-law Shirley McKay (Grant), Lois Crowder (Frank), Diana Hicks (Eric), and Alma Winsor (Bill). He was a special uncle to his many nieces and nephews.

A special thank you to the first responders who came to the house, and all the emergency staff at Sault Area Hospital for their care and compassion.
