Obituary of Kay Ross

(Grace Caroline Thornhill)
(August 9, 1932 – May 10, 2026)

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Grace at the age 93 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on Mother's Day, May 10, 2026.

Predeceased by her husband of over 55 years, William (Bill) Ross. “Amazing” Grace is survived by her loving children Bruce Schipper-Ross (Ingrid), Patricia Ross-Slomke (Doug), Carol Ross-Bertrand (Paul), and Wayne Everett-Ross (Kathleen). She is also survived by three beloved grandchildren, Graeme, Naika, and Julianne, and great grand daughters, Kiana Grace and Zara Lila. Special mention must be made of her surviving long time family friend, Edwin Bruce Sr.

A former long-time resident of Sydney Mines, Cape Breton, she was born in Fortune, Newfoundland and was the daughter of the late Rose and the late Sea Captain Abraham Thornhill. The last of her immediate family, Grace is predeceased by brothers George and Harold, and sisters Mildred, Joy and Olive.

Grace was much loved. She was a woman of deep faith, resilience, kindness and positivity. She will be laid to rest at a private family burial at Lakeside Cemetery, North Sydney, in her beloved Cape Breton.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada, or the Alzheimer’s Society for research into vascular dementia, or a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).

The Garden of Promise
There is a place, I have been told,
Beyond an open gate
All have been invited
Where friends and loved ones wait.
It holds eternal promise
Of everlasting peace
No pain or sorrow ever comes
And teardrops there have ceased.
Abundant life is evident
Constant fresh and new
A garden of provision
With Eternity in view.
The promise is awaiting
A place we can abide
Fulfilled for all who answer
The call to come inside.
