Obituary of Melinda Gatternig
With heavy hearts, we announce the unexpected passing of Melinda, who left us peacefully on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at the age of 90. Born in Italy, Melinda immigrated to Sault Ste. Marie in 1951 at the age of 15 with her cousin Maria Klingenberger and from there built a beautiful life surrounded by the things she cherished most: her family, her animals, and the gardens she could often be found tending to at her home on Lake Superior.
Melinda was a woman of remarkable strength, kindness, and generosity to all those she encountered. A devoted animal lover, she found joy in caring for her many chickens and goats. She was happiest with her hands in the soil, her apron dusted with flour, or a warm meal simmering on the stove. Melinda worked hard her entire life, yet always made room for laughter, love, and good food.
She was the beloved mother and best friend of Elaine Caldwell (Peter), Ed Gatternig, Jasmine Leindecker, and Gary Gatternig (Sheree). She was a cherished grandmother to Bobbi (Gary), Amy, Tyler, and Eve; a proud great‑grandmother to Jasmine and Connor; and a loving great-great-grandmother to Dean.
She was eagerly awaiting the arrival of Dean’s baby sister, Vya. Though she won’t be here to welcome her in person, we know she will be watching over her family with love.
Predeceased by her two favorite neighbours and friends Theresa Woodcock and Maria Narducci.
Fondly remembered by her many nieces and nephews and their families in Italy as well as extended family here in Canada.
We know she is with her beloved furry companions Tasha, Sandy, Benny and Heidi.
Melinda spent her final years in the compassionate care of the staff at Extendicare Van Daele. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the extraordinary team who supported her with dignity and heartfelt kindness. Their care will not be forgotten.
As per Melinda’s wishes, no service will be held.
Those wishing to honour her memory may make donations to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society, a tribute to her lifelong love of animals. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
