Obituary of John Michael Martan

It is with deep sadness and much love that we announce the passing of John Michael Martan on Monday, July 20, 2026, in his 93^rd year. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and man of faith, John was deeply committed to his family, drew strength from his faith throughout his life, and found great joy in the time spent with those he loved.

John leaves behind his beloved wife and best friend of 69 years, Jean, and his cherished children, Karen (Roman Walkowiak), Ann Marie (Paul Shackelton), Michael Martan (Marnie) and John Martan. He was the treasured grandfather to Amanda Walkowiak, Brian Walkowiak, Matthew Shackelton, Deanna Glassco (Stephen), Olivia Halenda (Ricky) and Mitchell Martan, and great-grandfather to Emilie Periard and Weston Glassco. He is also lovingly remembered by his dear sister Ann Oravec and nieces and nephews Frances Martin, Carolyn Fung, Edward Oravec and David Oravec.

John was predeceased by his parents Maria and Michael Martan, and brother-in-law Frank Oravec.

John was a man of quiet humility who measured life's riches not by material possessions, but by the love he shared, the relationships he nurtured, and the difference he made in the lives of others. His family was the centre of his world, and the values he instilled—faith, hard work, kindness, and dedication will continue to live on through the generations that follow.

John developed a lifelong love of hockey growing up in Timmins, Ontario. As a young man, he played junior hockey with the Barrie Flyers and Sault Greyhounds. A proud highlight was winning the Memorial Cup with the Barrie Flyers in 1953.

The lessons he learned through hockey remained with him during his life. The values of humility, perseverance, teamwork, discipline, kindness and respect for others were the foundation of the person John was.

Following his years in hockey, John worked at Algoma Steel in the Accounting Department, he furthered his business education at Algoma University. Balancing work, marriage, and family responsibilities, John exemplified a strong work ethic, quiet determination, gentle humility and commitment to achieve his goals.

After his retirement from Algoma Steel, John served for 13 years on the Sault Ste. Marie Board of Education, contributing to local education.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers, healthcare professionals, and friends who provided John with compassionate care, kindness, and support throughout his journey. Their dedication, comfort, and friendship brought great strength to John and his family and will always be remembered with deep appreciation.

A special thank you to Dr. Buehner and Dr. Reich at the Sault Group Health Centre and the Bayshore Palliative Nursing Staff, for the exceptional care, compassion, and dignity shown to our Dad. Your kindness touched our hearts and brought comfort during a difficult time. We will be forever grateful.

A Memorial Mass celebrating John's life will be held at Precious Blood Cathedral on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. with Father Jeff Shannon officiating. Family and friends are warmly invited to attend. Private Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
