Obituary of John Marinovich Sr.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the sudden passing of John who passed away peacefully on Friday, July 24, 2026, at the age of 87.

Just recently, John and the love of his life, Carole Marinovich, celebrated an extraordinary milestone—65 years of marriage. Together they built a lifetime filled with love, laughter, unwavering devotion, and countless cherished memories.

John was a proud and devoted father to Kelly Zorzit (Mike), John Marinovich Jr. (Sue), Niko Marinovich (Brenda), and Troy Marinovich. He was a cherished Dida to his beloved grandchildren Tyson (Amy), Shane (Chrissy), Matt (Lana), Bailey (Tyler), Abbey (Erik), Mara, and Gemma, who brought him endless pride and joy. He was also blessed to be a great-Dida to Mason, Mia, Camden, and Nellie, each of whom held a special place in his heart. 

John was born on August 25, 1938, to the late Matt and Sandy Marinovich. He was the beloved brother of sisters Doreen Marinovich (Peter) and Gail Boston (Fergie). John was a fabulous brother-in-law to Eleanore (Angus), Bernadette (Frank), Fred (Jo), Nicky (Joan), Ruzia, Janet, Bobby, and Debbie (Brian). He will be missed by his honourary brother, Vic. A lifelong resident of Sault Ste. Marie, John dedicated his life to his family, hard work, and creating good times.

In his youth, John was a man of great strength. He built his life with calloused hands and a back made of iron. There wasn’t much John couldn’t build, repair, or fix. He was also artistic, and took pride in doing things right, with resolution.

For 39 years, John worked at Algoma Steel as a 4 High Roller in the Plate and Strip Mill. He was known for his work ethic, reliability, and quiet determination—qualities that defined him throughout his life.

To know John was to know laughter. He had a playful and lighthearted sense of humour, loved to tell stories, and had a way of making every gathering more memorable. He was often the life of the party, captivating family and friends with stories that grew richer with every telling and a booming laughter that was impossible not to share. It was clear to all who knew John that beneath this fun and kind personality was a heart of gold. 

John found great happiness in the outdoors. An avid fisherman and hunter, he felt most at home in nature, but nothing compared to the joy he found spending time with his family. Whether gathered around the table, working on a project, sharing a cup of coffee, or raising a shot of brandy, those moments together meant everything to him.

John’s passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. His strength, generosity, laughter, stories, and love for his family will live on through the generations he leaves behind. The lessons he’s passed on, the memories he created, and the love he gave will never be forgotten.

A heartfelt thank you to the Prince Township Emergency Response Team as well as the doctors and nurses in the ICU at the Sault Area Hospital for their care and compassion.

In keeping with John’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at home and there will be no public visitation or funeral service. If you knew John, the family asks that you honour him through spending time with your loved ones, casting a fishing line, cooking and enjoying a home-cooked meal, or offering kindness to someone in need.
