We are so sorry to hear of Jane's passing.
I have many memories of when our family visited Jane back in the days when my brother and I were kids. This was probably around 20+ years ago now!
Back in those days, my grandparents owned my great grandparents old farm in Wharncliffe. That's where we stayed every time we visited. This place was shared by aunts, uncles, and cousins. A regular part of our trips 'up north' was visiting Jane!
Once we got to Jane's place, it became 'Jane's World' immediately. Endless freeze's, treats, boat rides, camp fires, etc. One of my best memories was with Jane and her First Nation friend helping us make dream catchers (with leather shields). They looked amazing and we kept them for a very long time. I even remember them explaining the history and reason why that they were made.
I even remember great Uncle Carl taught me how to play cribbage back then.
The last time I saw Jane was about 5 years ago at her place near Wharncliffe. We stayed for a few nights and I was also able to introduce my now wife to Jane. We didn't get much of a chance to catch-up as she had some stuff to take care of in the Sault. Either way, I am glad my wife got to meet her and it was so nice to see Jane again.
My wife also got to see Aurora Borealis for the first time at Jane's place. Another great memory.
I knew Jane was a big proponent of First Nations culture and rights. However, I had no idea how much of a role she played in it until putting her name in 'google' and seeing all that she has done. My wife and I have attended a local Pow-Wow and also a local presentation on the dark history of the residential schools. More people need to open their eyes to this stuff.
Anyways, Jane deserves massive credit for all the work she has done with First Nation culture and awareness. Not only that, but the positive memories she has created with her family and friends.
Thank you Jane. The world needs more people like you.
