Obituary of Dominic Santana

Please share a memory of Dominic to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
SANTANA, Dr. Dominic Anthony "Donny" - A Life well lived brings such mixed emotions. While you never want to see it end, it both breaks your heart and fills it at the same time when it does. In the early evening hours of August 9, 2016, with an unwavering love and resilience our father, Dominic slipped away peacefully from our family to be with his loving wife Mary. He was born on February 5, 1932 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario to Frank Santana and Florence Carota. He is the adoring husband of 58 years to the late Mary Santana. Dominic's family was everything to him. He leaves behind his children Denise and Jim, Mark and Victoria, John, Lisa and Kelvin and Michael and Laura. Nano will be especially missed by his adored grandchildren Stormer, Ella, Kate, Gabriel and Isabella. He will be remembered by his immediate family Ron and Sandra Santana, Frank and Linda Santana, Rose and the late Sandro Mariotti and the late Dora and late Gene Scarfone and all of his nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind his adoring sisters-in-law Amelia Lento and Louise Fitzpatrick. He will be especially missed by his cherished friends and relatives, Comara and Compare Gemma and Gene Chiarelli. Dominic graduated from McGill University with a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 1959. He practiced dentistry in Sault Ste. Marie for 40 years. During that time he held the position of President of the Sault and District Dental Society for 5 years. Dominic grew up in the West End with strong roots to the Italian community. He helped build the G. Verdi Lodge in it's location on Queen St. W. as Venerable, a position he held from 1962-68. Our father loved his homes at Pointe aux Pins in the Soo and in Naples Florida. They were central to his love of friends and family as he so loved to gather with both. His passion for golf was evident in how much he loved to play and watch the sport. He will especially be missed by his golf partner, life long friend and cousin, Joseph Disano. His professional life mixed well with his personal life as he had deep friendships with his dental group, Michael Nanne, George Shunock, Nilo Fabbro and Lou Lukenda. Never forgetting his roots, he continued to gather on a monthly basis with his dear friends "the Romeo's" until last month. In the last year and a half of his life, with a great burden left by the passing of his dear Mary, Maple View Nursing Home became his home. He grew to love his newly adoptive family. The loving care provided by staff at Maple View supported his and his children's ability to carry on without their dearly beloved wife and mother. This final chapter of his life here on earth cannot be understated and as Donny would say frequently to all that cared for him, "I love you... You know that, don't you!" Family and friends may call at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre on Friday evening from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Funeral mass to be held Saturday, August 13, 2016 at St. Jerome's Parish at 11:00 a.m. with Father Daniele Muscolino officiating. Entombment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum. Memorial donations to the Diabetes Association, SAH Cancer Care Clinic or the charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family. www.northwoodfuneral.com
