Obituary of Mary Toppan

For the love of a dear, sweet, lady, with deep sorrow we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved Mary at the FJ Davey Home on Sunday, September 24, 2023. Loving wife and best friend of David for 61 years. Devoted mother of Sandy St. Germain (Brian Kyle), Steve (Rose) and Julie Longo (Nick). Proud and special Nana of Alyssa St. Germain (Greg Gagnon), David (Alysha Briglio), Dalton (Brianna Scarfone), Brianna and Alessia Longo.

Dear daughter of the late Stefano and Giovanna Berlingeri and daughter-in-law of the late Fioravante Toppan and Augusta Lorenzon. Dear sister of the late Tony Berlingeri (Celeste) and Ermanno Berlingeri. Dear sister-in-law of the late Antonietta Liut, late Dirce Venturini, Fidalma Santin, late Giovanni Toppan, late Elena Vidotto, late Angelo Toppan, and Iolanda Cesco (late Maurizio).  Special cousin of Josephine Carter. She will be fondly remembered by her many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends.

Mary was born February 15, 1936 in Villa Santa Lucia, Italy. She immigrated to Sault Ste. Marie with her family at the age of 18. After several years of settling into Canada, she met the love of her life, David Toppan, and together they shared a wonderful life for 61 years. Her children and grandchildren were her greatest pride and accomplishment. She always looked forward to family dinners together and we couldn’t wait to experience her amazing Italian cooking!

Besides cooking and raising her family, Mom loved music and dancing. She was a proud member of the Elettra Marconi Society for many years where she enjoyed playing bocce in the women’s and mixed leagues.  She also loved going to the casino with her friends and playing the slot machines.

Friends and family are invited to visit at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758) on Friday, September 29, 2023 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Funeral Service in the Chapel at 1:00 p.m. with Father Trevor Scarfone officiating. Entombment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Mausoleum. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie would be appreciated by the family.

A heartfelt thanks to the compassionate health care team of providers at the FJ Davey Home, Alzheimer Society, Geriatric Clinic, Sault Area Hospital, Bayshore Healthcare and Home and Community Care for all the support throughout the years.
