We had the pleasure of knowing Ken for a great number of years. Ron remembers his service to Sault Search & Rescue and especially on the Bon Soo Committee. Ken always made everyone feel special, young or old, new friend or long-time friend. I used to see him at St. Gerard Majella Church where he was at the grand-kids celebrations, as our daughter Rachel was at St. Paul's school as same time as Adam was. Ken was always a proud Grampa! We will always fondly think of those twinkling blue eyes and big smile. God Bless you Ken, as you enter His wonderful kingdom. We will meet again.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ken three months ago this day at Collegiate Heights. Ken participated in a project called Memoirs of a Century where he shared his life stories with myself and a family friend, Cameron. After reading the story we came up with, Ken gave me a call to point out the inaccuracies with his story. After meeting up with him a few times to get the details right, I was moved by the love that Ken had for his family and his friends at Collegiate Heights. Here is Ken's memoir that made the cut:
Ken Lajambe was born on July 23rd 1926, in Franz, Ontario, a small northern community North of Wawa. Ken was the third of five children born to Lawrence and Frances Lajambe. Ken has fond memories of both his parents; they instilled in their children the value of hard work, the importance of family, and other significant traits that have managed to keep the Lajambe clan tightly knit over the years. Despite the setback of losing his sister to an undiagnosed illness, and having modest means, Ken had the happiest of childhoods. It was his earlier years in Franz that helped shape Ken's love of the outdoors, but also his work ethic, modelled after his mother, whom aside from caring for five children, was a grade school teacher and ran a business.
After his schooling, Ken moved to Chapleau, Ontario to work for the Canadian Pacific Railway as a locomotive engineer. In Chapleau, Ken met his future wife, Noreen Margaret Delaney. For Noreen, Ken went to great lengths to find the perfect engagement ring - he made the trek to Montreal, Quebec to find a suitable engagement ring, since those in Chapleau just would not do! With a ring in tow, Ken was finally able to propose to Noreen.
After they had married, the newlyweds moved to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario where Ken started work as an electrical contractor. They had three children together, Joanne, Karen, and Dan. They worked together to provide a stable and loving environment for their children. Ken reared his children by following after his mother's example, and instilled in them a strong work ethic and the importance of family. Ken went on to work at Algoma Steel, working his way as a member of a maintenance crew to a maintenance supervisor (level one). Ken had the opportunity to travel overseas to visit steel corporations in Europe, looking at new equipment and parts. Ken worked at Algoma Steel for 20 years until he retired in 1982.
He also shared his love of nature with his children. Ken loved the outdoors and had many fond memories of taking his family to their camp on Tribble Lake. However, his love for the outdoors was constantly tested by the dangerous wildlife of Northern Ontario. Ken recalls his daughter Karen and her cousins playing amongst a wooded area when they saw a black bear. Terrified with fear, the children ran back to the camp and Ken grabbed his rifle from indoors; within a moment, the bear appeared in the yard of their camp, encroaching on their territory. Dad looked after the problem.
Aside from his love of the outdoors, Ken was also able to share his love of flying with his family and friends. From a young age, Ken had been interested in the flying and had dreamed of one day owning his own plane. Ken became an experienced pilot through lessons and eventually owned two different aircrafts -a Fleet Canuck and then a four-seat 180 Cessna. For 20 years, Ken flew to visit family and often took his family or friends to camps up North. Whenever someone was in trouble or lost in the bush, Ken contributed his plane and time as a pilot to answer the call for help with Sault Search and Rescue.
Ken has been a strong community leader; he was President of the SSM Chamber of Commerce and led many fundraising efforts for Sault Search and Rescue and the Local Amateur Hockey league. Ken was also instrumental in the inception of the Ontario Winter Carnival, Bon Soo and the Heritage Bushplane Museum; each of which he served as President. Ken was highly sought after for his ability to fundraise and lead organizations out of deficits. Ken's talent for generating funds resulted in getting the Winter Carnival Bon Soo on its own footing, separate from the SSM Chamber of Commerce. Ken applied for a $75,000 grant from the government in order to expand the winter carnival and make it a major tourist attraction. With government approval, the carnival name was changed to the Ontario Winter Carnival Bon Soo, which transformed the community event into a provincial event. Ken was proud to welcome the public to Bon Soo each year as President with one of his grandchildren in his arms.
After years of dedicated volunteer work in Sault Ste. Marie, Ken was nominated for the Sault Ste. Marie Medal of Merit and in 2004, became one of a handful of recipients alongside Roberta Bondar. In a ceremony surrounded by family and friends, Ken accepted this Medal of Merit for his volunteer work in Sault Ste. Marie and his contribution to the community at large. This award personified what everyone already knew, that Ken Lajambe is a man of principle, hard work and community service. As Ken looked back on his accomplishments, he says "I have no regrets and I think I'm very unique in being able to say I did everything I ever wanted to do in life".

Our loss is heaven's gain but we will always remember Ken's smile and laugh and how he could tell you about an event he was supporting and regardless of your own interest in it, he would walk away with a donation, thanking you for sharing his enthusiasm. My heart felt sympathy to his family, dear friends Candy and Garth and others who like me were blessed to have known Ken.

We have lots of great memories of Ken from when we lived in the same neighbourhood in the early 70's and of family trips to the Soo in the 60's. If it was possible to bottle and pass on to others, Ken's energy and zest for life and volunteerism, members of the Lajambe family would be a very wealthy family. On a personal note, I would like to say thanks very much to Ken Lajambe for all that you've done for your fellow Saultites and your home town. Thanks for being so dedicated; so thoughtful and so caring an individual. Thanks for your energy, especially at a time in life when others would slow down, you didn't know what those words meant. Our condolences to your family. Rest in peace. Frank Fata City Councillor
