Obituary of Peter Buchan

Please share a memory of Peter to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Buchan, Peter Edgar (Ed) - It is with real sadness that we announce the passing of Ed Buchan on June 18, 2013, just two weeks shy of his 91st birthday. It is also with genuine gratitude that we celebrate a life well lived. Ed was predeceased in 2007 by his wife Bernice, following 62 wonderful years of marriage. He is survived by his children David (Kelly) and Jane, his three much loved Grandchildren, Chris Burns (Travis), Catherine Mah (Cecil) and Michael Buchan as well as 4 great-grandchildren who amused and delighted him. He also leaves his much loved younger brother Jim Buchan and his family. Ed was born in Sault Ste. Marie on July 2, 1922 to Jim and Louise, grew up on John Street, served in the Navy during the Second World War and came home to marry his sweetheart and start a family and a career with the Federal Government. He believed he had a duty to serve his community and volunteered with many groups; The Arthritis Society, the Canadian Cancer Society, Women in Crisis, The Ambassadors Group and the Canadian Red Cross. He was the President of the local Branch of the Red Cross and President of the Ontario Division of the Canadian Red Cross. He was awarded the Sault Ste. Marie Medal of Merit in 1985, the Dr. William Hutchinson Award in 1985, United Way Volunteer of the year in 1991 and was inducted into the Order of Red Cross in 1984. He enjoyed the positive changes he could make when he worked with community groups - he liked people, and was eternally optimistic about making the world a better place. Ed was elected to the Sault Ste. Marie School Board and served as the Chair for a number of years. Following his retirement from the Federal Government he also worked for the Ontario Social Assistance Review Board. He loved travel and he and Bernice enjoyed many winter vacations in Portugal. He was an avid outdoorsman, a good golfer, an exceptionally good photographer, and a regular at Tim Hortons. He was a truly generous man, always willing to say yes when asked for help, he had a kind sense of humour and was a good friend to many. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend and he will be missed by all who knew him. As per Ed's instructions there will be a family service at the St Luke's Columbarium at a later date. Donations in his memory to your favourite charity would be greatly appreciated. Thanks to Norm and Lindsay of the Red Cross, Susan from Bayshore Health, Donna from Premiere Health Care and the staff of 1 B of the Sault Area Hospital for their care and support. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation & Reception Centre, 942 Great Northern Road, Sault Ste. Marie, ON P6B 0B6 (705- 945-7758). www.northwoodfuneral.com I shall pass this way but once Any good therefore that I can do, Let me do it now For I shall not pass this way again.
