"Those who we love go out of sight but never out of
mind. Still cherished in the lonely hearts of those they've left behind."
John passed away peacefully and on his own terms in his home on Tuesday,
March 25, 2014 surrounded by his family. Predeceased by his beloved wife
Betty, in January 2007. John and Betty were a familiar sight for many
years walking the trails at Fort Creek with their dogs Chance and
Champ. Father of Liz (Carl), Tina (Ed), Chris (Stephanie) and Laurie
(Jan). Grandfather of Christopher, Timothy, Cory and Ryan. Survived by
sister-in-law Irene (Austin) and many nieces and nephews in Canada and the UK. Predeceased by his brother and two sisters Bob, Bett and Jo, all from England. John was born in Godmanchester, England on December 9, 1925. As a young man during WW2 John served as a Lance Corporal with the Irish Guard. Following the war John met his bride to be Betty who served as a WAF. After being married John and Betty moved to Canada in 1951 to start their new life together. John worked at the Algoma Central Railway most of his life and was extremely happy to collect his pension for more than 25
years. He lived to golf in the summer and was a familiar sight at both
Root River and Superior View Golf Courses. He took pride in being one of the
oldest golfers in his group of golf buddies. John loved to give advice to
amateur golfers, his favorite line was "just step up and hit the ball!"
John will be missed by his many friends from golfing and bowling. Despite
his ongoing fight from age related illnesses, John managed to maintain his smile,
sense of humour and his dignity but above all his love of family and
friends. He loved nothing more than to have people over for his special
roast beef dinner on Sundays. He will be missed by special friends, Karen
and Kim - John greatly cherished your company, good humour and
thoughtfulness over the years. John also had a special bond with his
caregiver, Selena. "Death sometimes comes to let us know we love more
dearly than we show but love in death shall let us see what love in life
should always be." Thanks for being our Dad, you were always there strong
as a rock for us. Thank you for allowing us to help you follow your wish
to remain in your cherished family home. We would like to thank the following for supporting us to help fulfill John's last wish; Dr. Cziffer, Dr. Shaffee, Kathy Palumbi, Jen Smith and Enzo Turchet. Donations to Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) or The Animal Assistance Group (TAAG) would be appreciated.
