Most people know about the infamous 'Engagement Photo Story'. It's a photo of when Nanna and Nannu were first engaged. In it, the look on Nanna's face was so sad, you'd have thought she just lost her best friend. In a way, she felt she had. She wanted nothing more than to dedicate her life to God, but her parents had different plans for her. She complied, understanding that honoring her mother father was not a choice, but an obligation.
I last saw Nanna in June of 2014. At that visit, a few of us were talking and that photo came up in the coversation and we started to laugh. She however, was not amused. In all the times we had discussed that time and the expression on her face, she had laughed with us. This time, she was angry. She had a tone that made the wound seem raw. 'I didn't WANT to get married. I WASN't happy. It's not what I wanted.'
I had never heard her be so stern, except when she was putting Nannu (God rest his soul) in his place. It was as though she wanted us to understand just what a sacrifice it was (she never made it seem as though it was).
The emotion wasn't shadowed by her weakened body. There was undying conviction behind her words.
I told her I was sorry that she couldn't live the life she felt she was destined for, but quickly followed with how grateful I was that she travelled down the road she was so firmly put on. I owe my life to that road and it's something I am eternally grateful for.
The joy we can focus on now, is that she can finally be reunited with the loved ones that went ahead of her, but more so, she can be fully one with the God she was so dedicated to. Finally Na, your life is fully in His hands, just like you always wanted. What a blessing.
We miss you. We love you and we're so happy for you.
