Obituary of Harry Jones

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, Harry Jones at the Sault Area Hospital surrounded by family on Sunday, November 15th. Best friend and husband of Dianne Jones for 52 years. Cherished father of Marlene Hewson (Scott), Kathy Jones-Pine (Tim), Lana Jones (Dave), Michael Jones (Jenny). Loving Grandfather of Nicholas, Dee-Anna, Andrea (Cody), Veronica (Gus), Cheyenne, Wesley (Sherri), James, Jess, Joshua, Shelby (Keegan), Shannon (Matt) and Great Grandfather to 13. Loving son of Susan Biron (late Harry). Special Brother to Peter (Patsy), Sally (late Don), Monica (Kenny) and late Randolph and John. Godfather to Jenny Pine. Son in law of the late Kathleen and Louis Syrette. Much loved brother in law of Edward, Tim (Darlene), Charlotte (Darren), Elaine, Colleen (Orville) and late Mickey (Jay), late Paul, Susie and Marcel. Well loved and respected Uncle to many. Special "Popalopa" to Marcel and Easton. Special bush partner, fishing Buddy and mentor who will be greatly missed by Wesley. Friends may call at Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road 705-945-7758) on Thursday, November 19th from 3:00 p.m. until time of Memorial service in the Chapel at 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers donations to Immaculate Heart of Mary Building Fund or Multiple Sclerosis Society would be appreciated. Harry attended the Indian Residential School in Spanish, Ontario where, while obtaining his education, he became a member of their well-known travelling hockey team. From there, he joined the Royal Canadian Navy where he served for ten years in Technical Training in weapon control systems and radar as well as a Petty Officer in charge of weapons systems maintenance on board destroyers with two years of service at the National Defense Headquarters in Ottawa. Following his military service, he was employed at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie for 30 years as an electronic technician also serving as a union steward. He also volunteered his time before and after his retirement in 1999 with the Sault Ste. Marie Public School Board, the Chamber of Commerce as well as with Batchewana Band Industries where he was instrumental in the start-up of the First Nation's industrial park. For the past 15 years, Harry has served as Vice-Chair of the Waubetek Business Development Corporation and on the Board of the National Access-to-Capital Corporation. Harry also made presentations to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples and at the Banff Centre for Management on best practices in Aboriginal businesses. He also represented Northern Ontario on a trade mission to Germany in 2000. Recently he assisted the National Aboriginal Capital Corporations Association with changes to their governance structure. Harry's calming nature, his sage wisdom and his strong belief in the potential of Aboriginal people, and businesses generally, will be greatly missed in the networks that he worked within so passionately. Everyone who knew Harry remarked on the great love he often expressed for his wife, his children, and his grandchildren. As a very respected Elder-Statesman, Harry will truly be missed.
