I knew Hans socially, like many others. My first meeting left quite an impression. It would have been around 1987 and I was just over 20 years old. My little brother had saved money for a long time, and had just bought a new bicycle, and was extremely proud as he rode it off the driveway for the first time. And then... he became distracted for a moment and rolled into the bumper of a parked truck, damaging the forks and frame. We all felt terrible, and started having visions of throwing this brand new bike into the trash. Well, someone gave us Hans' number and encouraged us to call. We arrived at his home, were directed to the garage, and could not believe our eyes as we watched this fellow take one thing apart and put the other thing onto a jig and bend this and adjust that, and as for the forks that were bent... he just happened to have a pair hanging from the wall, and they were better quality than the originals. All the while, the door to the house was open and he called and answered back and forth to his wife, and this all seemed very normal to him. To this day I have never yet made it to Santa's workshop, but since that time I don't feel I've been missing anything, either. Years have passed, and I have married and become a father of two girls, had a family medicine practice in the Sault for a number of years, and now do the same in Kingston, where my wife grew up. I have been exposed to many experiences, many influences. Here is my point. Over the years I have been amazed how many times I have gone back in my mind to that day meeting Hans the first time. And I know this one experience contributed to certain decisions I have made over the years, to keep working at my passions and to keep some passion in my work. That is a rare influence. Condolences, prayers, and warm wishes from my family to yours. Lou.

Dearest Ingrid and family; Éva and I were so shocked and saddened to hear about Hans’ passing on Monday. Shocked, because he was always such a fit person, even now I always thought of him as an athlete in his late forty’s. Saddened because I, as for the rest of the Krell family, consider you and Hans as very close friends. Unfortunately we did not have enough opportunity to see and talk with Hans, but it was something I always looked forward to coming to the Soo and knowing he would be at a common celebration, like the one last April. I enjoyed all our conversations, often drifting into cycling, of course, and about the problems in the world and how to fix those. Unfortunately I did not get to know your children, Barbara, John and Michelle well, except that Hans spoke very highly and proudly about them and his grandchildren. We appreciated very much the time we did spend with Hans and feel we are the richer for that, a feeling I am sure is shared by many. To you all, his family and many friends, we extend our heartfelt sympathy. We realize that words are not enough to assuage your loss, but you can take some comfort knowing your grief is shared. With time, your fond memories of Hans are sure to bring a smile to your faces as it will to ours. Love, Peter and Éva

Dearest Ingrid, John-Michael, Michelle Words seem inadequate to express the sadness that Robert and I feel over learning about Hans's sudden death, and we both send you our most heartfelt condolences. Having known all of you my whole life, your family was an integral part of my growing up. I will always have fond memories of the times we spent together, and of the conversations that I always enjoyed with Hans. " although it is difficult today to see beyond the sorrow, may looking back in memory help comfort you tomorrow" with deepest sympathy, Monica
