We are deeply saddened at the loss of such a wonderful man. I (Carol) had the pleasure of teaching with Walter in Bruce Mines and I can truly say he was one of the most caring and respected people I have ever had the privilege of knowing. The world is a better place because Walter took the time to know and appreciate everyone and everything he came in contact with. Two of our children were lucky enough to have had Walter as a teacher at St. Joseph Island Central School and both their responses when they heard were exactly the same...'Oh not Mr. B. I loved Mr. B.!' These few words are a tribute to what a fantastic teacher and mentor he was to so many young people and co-workers. He will be greatly missed. We are not able to be there to offer our condolences in person but we extend our hearts and our prayers to Lynda and the family. God bless all of you.

Chris, They say that as time passes, you miss your loved one less. I don't know that this is true but i honestly believe that you grow accustomed to them being gone and the pain grows a little bit easier to take. I hope this happens for you and your family because no matter how old we are...or they were when they passed...it is always scary and heart breaking when a parent dies. With sincerest sympathy... I wanted to express my love and care for your family. He was my Grade 8 Teacher on St. Joes Island many many years back now. He was an excellent teacher, and though I didn't learn much of him until just reading of him now I am thankful to have been given the opportunity to learn from him as his student. Sounds like a wonderful man who lived life lovely. I just had a close friend die of ALS This last month as well. I can feel for you deeply. May God bring us a CURE this so that it will no longer exist in our children's and grandkids future. Sending my love to you all. xoxo

I was a student of Mr. Belsito's and I am certain it must be close to 25 years since I last saw him but I can remember him so clearly. I can picture him exactly as he was then. I remember being in class with him, watching videos and hearing stories about adventures in Papua New Guinea. In the fourth grade, he helped me prepare a science project for which I won first prize at our school science fair. Impressive, especially considering he was my french teacher! I come from a broken home, we moved a lot, I didn't have friends. There are three teachers who helped me overcome those challenges and for whom I cared deeply and Mr. Belsito is the first. He was vibrant, cheerful, kind, funny, caring and the zest with with he approached everything was contagious. It was impossible not to smile when you were near him. He made everything seem like an adventure, everything seemed more interesting when he explained it. He was always encouraging and helpful. When he saw me struggling, it seemed a natural thing for him to help me. He made me love learning. Considering where I came from, that love of learning changed my life. I mourn his loss and I knew him only briefly, as a child whose life he touched momentarily. The depth of grief his family must feel is surely profound. He was an inspiration to me as I'm sure he was to many others. The sun shines less brightly without him. Please accept my deepest condolences for your loss. Sincerely, Christina Speers

Walter was a pretty outstanding person. He was the first principal I worked for in the elementary school system. To say I had a challenging year is an understatement, but Walter made my transition into Thessalon Public an enjoyable one and a memorable one. He supported me in everything I tried and gently mentored me to help me become a better teacher and person. When he left the school his presence was greatly missed by both staff and students. I have never forgotten his kindness towards me or how much he was respected by both staff and students. His help and patience helped me through a very difficult year and for that I will never forget him. My thoughts are with his family at this time.
