When you stepped on the baseball field under Dave's leadership, you became a better player. It was almost magical, really, the way he could transform average players into stars. Dave was a great instructor, but this only accounted for a small part of his success. More importantly, Dave instilled confidence in all his players. Dave believed in us, and helped us to believe in ourselves. His wonderful passion for the game of baseball rubbed off on all his players. When you played for Dave you couldn't help coming to the diamond excited, confident, and ready to give it your best. We wanted nothing more than to play with the same passion on the field as Dave showed from the dugout. He helped create a love for the game of baseball in me that will never die.
~Robert Hurst, former Bloordale Baseball player and coach

A branch has fallen from the tree in late summer.
Sunday's best has turned the page,
but lingers,
as if I'd seen him yesterday.
An open door,
an open heart,
loving,
rising above it all.
All the good he's done for me,
each gift a living proverb,
to pass along in time.
And with the finest wine,
served now through our lives,
his legacy we honour.

Spending some time recently with this extended family made me aware of the abundance of love that enriched and supported David throughout his life and in his final days. His family is a wonderful reflection of the love he gave...a beautiful legacy.

The formal definition of cahoots is when two brothers gang up on a third brother to extend an already marathon game of 9…..5……2. The trick is to know when and how to make these alliances and, more importantly, when to dissolve them (the how was painfully obvious). David was a master at playing his younger brothers, but we learned quickly, hence the marathon games. Fond memories.

I've seen you guys more in the last 8 months than I have in the last 8 years. One thing I noticed in these difficult times, is that you were always there for David and he felt a comfort when you were around. Sure the boys and I could chuck sh@t and talk baseball, but you provided a strength that he could draw on. You were a pillar of strength, and I could tell he felt safe in your arms. David is a lucky man.

David will live on in our memories. He was a wonderful Husband to my sister and Father to my nephews. The family reunions we spent together are some of our most cherished memories, camping non stop games and baseball. We all Love you and will miss you until we meet again
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow,
I am the sun on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there; I did not die.

It was with a great sense of loss when I heard of Uncle David’s death. His kindness and laughter have definitely been an influence in my life and will be dearly missed. The measure of a life well-lived is not in how much money one has or what possessions they have accumulated, but rather through the lives they touched and the sorrow they leave behind. If the outpouring of sympathy on his loss is any indication, and it most certainly is, you can proudly and confidently say that his indeed was a life well-lived. May you find peace and comfort in knowing that his loss is felt by all who knew and loved David.

Dave was the best! He knew how to inspire and challenge and he knew how to celebrate and comfort. His success as a coach and commissioner came as no surprise to me. He was and still acts as my mentor. He was the best big brother anyone could ask for.
His razor-sharp wit made him a favourite at the card table; a lot of stories there including some involving chip dip. Yep, he turned many simple card games into legendary stories of hilarious battles between loved ones. It just was not in his nature to let anything be boring or routine. With Dave, you knew, no matter what you were doing together, it was going to be memorable.

David was a wonderful husband and father. Josh and Dylan were his pride and joy. My parents brought us up to give back to the community. Dave's passion for ball and the energy he put into his kids and coaching proved this. Your spirit will always live on. Your loving sister Catherine

My brother was a "GIVER", a leader, a man of integrity, who never compromised his values. He loved his family and he loved baseball. Many tributes have been posted in his honour. "Dave touched hundreds of baseball families in Bloordale, Etobicoke and Toronto. He served his community not only as a coach but also on the executives of Bloordale, Etobicoke and Toronto serving as President for many years on all three of the associations."
His passion for baseball was passed onto his two sons, Dylan and Joseph, who presently coach and instil the values of respect and good sportsmanship in their players. Dave's infectious smile, sense of humour (often at his sisters' expense) and loving spirit will live forever in my heart.

My mom shared this story with us yesterday. David had a paper route and every payday he would have a bag of candy in each pocket. One for Joe and one for Dan. He adored his two younger brothers.

"let us thank God for having made us this gift of the life thereafter, so that life here is to have meaning; of night, that day is to have meaning; silence, that speech is to have meaning; illness, that health is to have meaning; war, that peace is to have meaning. Let us give thanks to Him for having given us weariness and pain, so that rest and joy are to have meaning” – Amin Maalouf Although time and distance have kept my cousins and me apart the quality of their characters had always been made clear thanks to my mother and father who luckily have the chance to know them better than I. By testament of the quality of his sons, David was a wonderful father. Those who were fortunate to call him husband, brother, friend, uncle, father or son were lucky to have him in their lives, however brief it may have been. Inspired by the quote above from a favorite author of mine, has instilled in me a desire to make the most of every moment, the gifts we have and to find the meaning of all things in our lives. I hope that it may do the same for others. It is with a heavy heart, I offer my condolences to you, Jos, Dylan, and Aunt Gloria. Matthew

We are very sorry for your loss. Although we didn't know David in later years, we do have early family memories when we used to come to the Sault for vacation. After reading the many tributes and knowing Aunt Lena and Uncle Joe wo well, it is no suprise what a wonderful man, husband and father, David grew to be. From our family to yours, our most heartfelt sympathies.
