Obituary of Bernice Young
Please share a memory of Bernice to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with great sadness the family of Bernice announces her passing at her home on Tuesday, February 11, 2020 at the age of 90, after a short but difficult illness with multiple myeloma. Born in Seaside, New Brunswick to Peter and Isabelle McCarthy. Bernice graduated from teacher’s college in 1947 and was the principal of a two-room schoolhouse until she married, Alfred Young (predeceased in December 2001). Bernice and Alfred were married for 46 years and grew their family in Sault Ste. Marie. She was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed many different activities over the years like square dancing, bowling, and quilting.
Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her children: Kevin of Edmonton, Vicki (John Sharabura), Carla, Faron (Lori), Sharon (Joe Coutu) of Sault Ste. Marie, and Monica (Geoff Harding) of Wimborne, UK. Bernice was a proud grandmother to 14 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. She was a special friend to Ron Tucker. Bernice will be lovingly remembered by her brother Stanley (Gervance) of Sturgeon Falls, and her sister Veronica of Toronto. She was predeceased by her sisters Marion, Ethel, Thelma and Carmel. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Her daughters, Sharon, Vicki, and Monica, and granddaughter Rhiannon helped fulfill her wish to stay in her own home. We would also like to thank Susie from Bayshore, and Dr. Barbeau and Dr. Wilson for their support.
God has called home our beautiful, strong and loving matriarch. Our family is grateful for the opportunity to say goodbye over these past few months. At Bernice’s request, a graveside service will be held for her family and friends in the spring. Memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
