Obituary of Paul Edward Channer

Son of the late Bishop Vinnel Tobell Channer and Elaine Cynthia Channer. Brother of Bishop Wayne (Jen) Channer, James (Tomasina) Channer, Carlene Channer. Uncle to Devaughn, Kenyon and Safi (James), Matthew and Nathaniel (Wayne) and Cynthia (Carlene). Being born into a Pastor’s family, Paul became a Christian at age 11 and was very active in the Church. Paul worked in the church as a musician, Sunday School Teacher and Youth Pastor. Paul later became an ordained Minister in the Church of God in Christ (COGIC). He was given the role of Senior Pastor of a new church work which he named Word of Life COGIC. In his roles within the church many youths received mentoring and training which would serve them into their adult years. Paul’s appetite for technology led to many positions within large corporations where his passion for helping others excelled. Success and tragedy often mark our life’s path. Paul lost his best friend and confidant in the person of his mother in 2010. He dedicated a large part of his life taking care of her and at her departure, it left a large void. As that chapter closed, Paul opened a new chapter in Sault Ste. Marie. Paul graduated from Sault College with a degree in Child and Youth Work in 2015 and began studying Social Work at Algoma University. While his life took a drastic turn, his outlook on it never did. Friends quickly became family for Paul and he was always available when someone needed help or guidance or just a shoulder to cry on. Paul’s energy, his thirst for knowledge and learning, his zest for life and love for God, family & friends is what kept him going. Paul was an advisor, confidante, best friend, soul mate, confederate and truly, the REAL Batman. He loved his special family and best friends – Jason, Judy and Mackenzie Bentham and Hailey Bomhof & Trent Marlow. He will be missed by many cousins, aunts, uncles and friends that loved him. Paul would not have been here as long as he had if not for the incredible care given by so many: the Sault Area Hospital Renal Department – especially the nurses and staff of the Dialysis Unit; Doctors Berry and Schafiee; Dr. Opryszczko; the incredible physicians and nurses of the ICU department; all the PSWs, Care Coordinators and staff at CCAC. There were many involved in Paul’s care so please know that we thank you. A celebration of Paul’s life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to Sault Area Hospital Renal Dialysis Care Fund would be appreciated.
