Obituary of Doreen Atkins
Please share a memory of Doreen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
It is with saddened hearts that the family announces the peaceful passing of Doreen (Miskimins) with her girls by her side on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at the age of 93. Cherished Mother of Terri Elliott (Rick) and Lori Atkins. Long awaited Grandma to Lindsay Virene. Loving partner of the late Les Arnott of 30 years, they are now free to dance to the music once more. Predeceased by her parents, Russell and Sarah Miskimins and her brother, Lawrence Miskimins. Sister-in-law of Theresa Atkins and the late Victor Atkins. Fondly remembered and known as Grandma Doreen to Kelly McMullin (Rob) and their children Chris, Cody (Erica and Colby), Conner and Aubrey and Michael Elliott (Jill) and their children Hope, Jacob and Bella. Doreen was “Mish” to the late Howard Atkins, “Arky” whom she shared her daughters with.
She enjoyed her 30 plus year career with the Group Health Centre where she consummated many everlasting friendships. Doreen never turned down an afternoon filled with shopping, lunch and car rides. Her favourite pass-time was spending time at the family camp at Horseshoe Bay. She loved to sit out on her deck and admire her gardens and plants, all in pink. She enjoyed her meals in the gazebo where she could watch her grandchildren play on the beach and watch the waves roll in. She loved to play bridge and she now can enjoy a game of bridge with all her partners that have left before her.
Doreen was a kind and caring soul, and her strength and beauty was admired by all. She overcame many obstacles along the way and her family is grateful to those over the years that have helped her maintain her independence which was important to her right to the very end. A special thank you for the love and support from her cousin, Wayne and Betty Boissineau. She always enjoyed their conversations and sharing special memories from the past. The family would like to extend our gratitude to the Great Northern Retirement Home and to her caregivers from CBI, Patty and Kaitlyn.
A celebration of life with family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, in honour of Doreen's love for her furbabies, Miss Kitty and Carver, contributions can be made to the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 25 or the charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated.
Mom, we are wishing you many more sunsets at Horseshoe Bay. We will watch for the special new shining star in the sky, you are now free to dance.
