Passed away peacefully, with family by her side, on Friday, April 9, 2021 at the Ontario Finnish Resthome. Wife of the late Arnold (Barney). Mother of Darlene Leistner (Robert), late Brenda Pierman, and Leanne McCallum. Nana of Kyle Leistner (Morgan), Scott Leistner (Chantara), Michael Pierman (Ainslie), Craig Pierman (Katrina), Jaimie Podrasky (Ryan), and Meghan Ryan (Trevor). Great grandmother of Logan, Leona, Graidie, Ivie, Jack, and Gabriella. Born to Howard and May Hurley in Echo Bay. Sister of the late Bill Hurley (Pat), late Marie Orchard (Bernard), late Clara Hodgkinson (Dan), Ross Hurley (Margaret), Ruby Vaughan (Cy), and Don Hurley (Judy). Sister-in-law of Pat Ingram (Winnipeg), and the late Ruby Egely. “Aunt Mabel” to many nieces and nephews. Mom gave 100% to her interests. She and Dad built one of the first homes on Moluch Street and for almost 60 years shared the community spirit of the neighbourhood. From clearing the land for their Goulais River camp, to her cashier job at Dominion/A&P (once earning the popularity vote of Cashier of the Year for Northern Ontario), her acting in many plays with The Musical Comedy Guild and serving on its board, her Kennel Club interests of competing, teaching Obedience Training and years of breeding, grooming and owning many of her “little buddy” poodles — all the while assisting at church and being the #1 advocate and caregiver in later years to our father and sister. Due to current Covid restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the Ontario Finnish Resthome Association (OFRA) or the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society. A big thank you to the staff at MKK, Ontario Finnish Resthome for their compassionate care and resident activities throughout the years, and to our personal companions Tiina, Jeanne, Anne, Penny, Corina, Rose and Britta. A heartfelt thank you to Teresa for being Mom’s angel on earth. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
