Dear O’ Leary Family, As someone already so aptly put it, Joan was a legend in medical circles here, a credit to her profession and her community. We were blessed in having her choose to live out her years here in the Sault. I believe she was a great advisor working alongside my father, Alex Harry in the establishing of the first Algoma Health Unit. He held her in the greatest esteem, along with Dr. Desmond Burns( another Irishman who found their way to Northern Ontario). The Harry family sends their deepest condolences, Cathryn ( Harry) Hussey

Joan held a very special place in all our hearts. We always considered her a member of our immediate family. She was our Mom’s best friend as the two of them ventured to Canada together from Ireland to begin their long caring nursing careers. Joan was the Maid of Honour at our parents wedding and was always an unwavering support to our busy household for many years. Always travelling from the Sault to Toronto to be with us at all our family celebrations.

Joan O'Leary gave me my first job as a public health nurse and pointed the way towards empathy and self discipline. Not an easy task to mould a young nurse...we thought we knew it all. Thanks for keeping us grounded and moving towards excellence in our profession by her own example. Lots of smiles and laughter too.I will never forget her favourite summary of me " You are a good nurse ..but green as the grass !" Rest in peace..you have earned your rest Miss O'Leary.

It was such an honour and pleasure to work at Algoma Health Unit ( Algoma Public Health) with Joan. She was one of a kind- spunky, honest, strong, smart and caring. Family meant so much to her. She was a lovely lady and very good to me. She was fair and when she had something to say to you , she said it “once” and that was it. I loved bumping in to Joan after her retirement- always had a nice chat. Treasure your memories of this great lady. Sincerely, Ann Marie Theriault
