It is with great sadness that the family of Carmela announces her passing after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, September 4, 2022 at the age of 82. Born on December 4, 1939, in Aiello Calabro, Italy. Carmela came to Sault Ste. Marie, Canada in 1959 where she raised her two children Sue Burns (Ken) and Frank Longo (Sherry). Predeceased by her husband Alfonso, her parents Francesco and Maria, and her brother Egidio. Carmela is survived by her loving siblings Luigi Guzzo (Lucy), Michele Guzzo (late Franca), and Emma Gallo (Frank). She was affectionately known as “Nannies” by her grandchildren Ken Burns (Brittany), Kaitlynd Audette (Phil), Haleigh Longo, Krysta Burns, and Taylor Longo, as well as her great granddaughter Aubrey Burns. Carmela will be fondly remembered for her brilliance, her mastery of cooking, as well as humour and hugs. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Carmela was extremely generous with her talents amongst her family, her friends, and the community, often with boundless energy and a flair for creativity. Her devotion to others and her faith was a gift to all who knew her.

 

Friends and family are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at 11:30 a.m. with Father Trevor Scarfone officiating. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or St. Gregory’s Church would be greatly appreciated by the family.


Carmela’s children would like to thank the staff at the Sault Area Hospital in unit 3C who saw to her care in her final days and the first responders who attended her in her home, especially Sgt. Poderys and Const. Smith. In addition, many thanks to Dr. Hill and his staff, as well as the family members who stepped up to help during her illness.
