Clifford Sharp

Obituary of Clifford Charles Sharp

Dad passed away quickly and quietly at the Sault Area Hospital on Monday, December 12, 2022 with family at his side, after a recent fall.

Cliff is the son of Charles and Martha (Martin) Sharp and husband of the late Eileen (Siegman). Predeceased by siblings Lloyd (Ruth), Marjorie Killoran (Mike), Minerva Laroue (Max), Geraldine Madill (Ken) and Alice Elwgren (Alex). Brother-in-law of Leo Siegman (Ann), Bill Siegman (Audrey), Erma Marshall (Don) and Roy Siegman (Dolores). Father of Linda Marasco (Conrad), Dan (late Marabeth) and J.D. (Janice). Grandfather of Samantha Marasco (fiancé Sam), Devan Marasco (Tomirah), Laura Stone (Mike), Michael Sharp (Hilary) and Rae Sharp. Great grandfather of Brea Marasco, Hunter and Gavin Stone and Miller Sharp.

He was a charmer, a natural salesman and as one of his editors said ‘the quintessential newspaperman’. In the 50s he was an Ad Man at the Sault Star and rose to be publisher at both the North Bay Nugget and the Sault Star, retiring in 1988. He was a farmer at heart, a boater, snowmobiler, hunter, fisherman, golfer and family man. He dedicated 50 years to both the Masonic Lodge and the Red Cross, most memorably, reuniting people from behind the iron curtain with their families in the Sault. He taught Dale Carnegie leadership and communication skills throughout Northern Ontario.

Dad was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s 15 years ago but retained his wit and sense of humour until near the end. In his last 8 years he was well cared for by Premier Homecare, Great Northern Retirement Home and Extendicare Maple View. Thank you to all the wonderful caregivers and administrators.

We recently celebrated Dad’s 95th birthday with our extended family and his friends and colleagues. There will be no visitation or funeral. A private interment at West Korah Cemetery will take place with Pastor Brad Mittleholtz officiating. Memorial donations to our local Red Cross to honour his over 50 years service or to the Algoma University Scholarship Fund for his love of lifetime education would be appreciated by the family. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, P6B 0B6, 705-945-7758).
