Obituary of Gwen Mah

Passed away peacefully at the FJ Davey Home with her family by her side on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, one day after her 86th birthday. Reunited with her beloved husband Fred.  Beautiful mother of Bob (Christina), Michael (Sophia), Timmy (Cristina) and Lisa Mah-Sayo (Sing). Much loved grandmother of Thomas, Jonathon, Quinlan, Freeman, Bodhi, Emily Kauppi, Pavel Rankin and Tabare Orti. Daughter of the late Mary Poon. Daughter-in-law of the late Cecil and the late Set Ying Mah. Dear sister of the late Norman Poon (late Faye) and the late Jimmy Poon and Lin Kwai Tam (late Chun Kung), whom she missed dearly.  Sister-in-law of Dick Mah (Patricia), the late Nancy Mah, Cecil Mah and Eva Lidstone (Phil).  Favourite Aunt of the late Diane, Mou Foon, Amy, Ken, Katie, late Neil, late Cecil, Chris, Kimberly, Kevin and Lauren.

Mom was born in Hoiping, China on April 25, 1937. She immigrated to Canada in 1950 and married dad in Edmonton, Alberta in 1956. From here, their journey started as they drove from Edmonton to Madoc, Ontario in a 1955 MGA and so began our mother’s love for sportscars. The family ran multiple eateries from Madoc to Elliot Lake before settling in Sault Ste. Marie in 1962. Mom worked tirelessly helping out at the Chic n Kwik, Purple Lantern and her own little shop called Gwen’s Gifts and Souvenirs. She was also seriously devoted to helping out number one son at the Lucky 7 Food Mart. She was loved by all the customers at the Lucky 7, as they would come to visit Gwen and talked with her for hours.

Mom was always the epitome of fashion, in dress, with the latest hair styles and her high heeled shoes (she even walked the Great Wall of China in them).  Mom was known for her “pillow cake” that she made for every special occasion and was always at the ready with a purse full of goodies, and only gave them out after her famous saying, “no kiss, no candy”. Mom was a gentle soul who dedicated her life to her children and grandchildren. She loved us unconditionally and always put everyone else before herself.

As per mom’s wishes a private family service has been held.  Interment at Greenwood Cemetery. Memorial donations made to the FJ Davey Home Foundation, or the Alzheimer Society of Sault Ste. Marie would be appreciated.  A special thank you and appreciation to all the nurses and staff, especially Heather and Cheryl for the wonderful care Gwen received on Birch Lane 1 and for treating us like family. Your kindness and compassion are immeasurable and we will be forever grateful. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
