Obituary of Sonja Hildegard Poser
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sonja at the Algoma Residential Community Hospice (ARCH) on July 27, 2023 in her 95th year. Loving wife for 70 years of the late Roland. Beloved and devoted mother of Wyatt (Kim) and cherished Omi of Ryan (Kristen) and Madison. Predeceased by her parents, Herbert and Hildegard Greiling. She will be fondly remembered by her family and friends in Canada and Germany.
Sonja was born in Gera, Germany in 1929 and immigrated to Canada with Roland and her parents in 1950. Sonja and Roland married in 1952 in Port Colbourne, Ontario. They lived and worked in Toronto, Guelph, and Medicine Hat before arriving in Sault Ste. Marie. They loved the area, so they decided to make Sault Ste. Marie home and raise their family.
Sonja was an active member of the YMCA for over 50 years where she enjoyed socializing, working out and swimming. Sonja and Roland enjoyed traveling to Europe to visit family and friends and to Florida just to relax. Sonja took pride in being a homemaker, decorating, caring for her home and family. She always prepared delicious meals and baking. She loved planting flowers in her garden. She enjoyed visits to the cottage on Upper Island Lake where she swam and took saunas with family. Her favourite thing was to spoil her grandchildren.
A private family celebration and service was held, where we honoured a life well lived and a woman admired, well loved and respected by all she met. Memorial Donations to ARCH would be greatly appreciated by the family.
Thank you to Collegiate Heights staff for their amazing support and kindness to Sonja over the last year and a half. The family would also like to express their gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and support workers at Sault Area Hospital and to the staff and volunteers at ARCH who provided excellent care, compassion and kindness in her final days.
