Obituary of Neil Scobie

It is with great sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our beloved father at the Sault Area Hospital in his 92nd year on Monday, December 18, 2023 in the presence of Cheryl.

Survived by and forever missed by daughter Cheryl Scobie (Mark Edwards) and son Daniel Scobie; grand-daughters Suzanne Robinson and Simone Scobie; great-grandsons Daniel and Thomas Scobie-Robinson.

Predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Alice (King), and parents Irven and Delia ‘Alma’ Scobie (Chenier).  Also predeceased by siblings Gloria Brown (Cecil), Leonard Scobie (Betty), Lola Larivee, Emma ‘Louella’ Cross (Peter), Lynda (Henry Dinardo) (Leo Valiquette) and survived by his sister Christina Parkinson (Ivan).  Many nieces and nephews across Ontario will miss their Uncle Neil.

Neil was born in his grandparents’ (Charles & Emma Chenier) home in Mattawa, Ontario. After many years as a young man assisting with the family farm in Rutherglen, Neil & Alice moved to Sault Ste. Marie. Neil worked for 37 years as a metallurgist at Algoma Steel. They enjoyed many happy years at camp at Patten Lake with their children and friends in the surrounding area.

Fiercely independent, Neil was truly a Northern Ontario man, who loved to catch fish, hunt, run his trap-line, make maple syrup, play cards, ride his wheeler, grow potatoes and apples, observe wild-life and watch hockey games, repair his equipment, eat pie with ice cream, visit with friends and above all provide for and spend time with his family. Neil was honest, hardworking and a dedicated father and husband and he will be forever missed.

A special thank you to his friends Leo Bertolo and Rick McLaughlin who made sure that Neil attended his twice-weekly card games at the Echo Bay Legion and the Moose Lodge.

Much gratitude to the SAH emergency staff who tended to Neil compassionately in his final minutes.  A special thank you to Dr. Gayle Yee for her years of service.

Cremation has taken place.  A ‘Celebration of Life’ and internment at Old Greenwood for Neil and Alice will take place later this year, with prior notice in SooToday. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758).
