Obituary of August Whalen
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gus, at his home with family by his side per his wishes on Monday, April 29, 2024, at the age of 92. He is now reunited with his partner, Connie, the mother of his children, Viola, and his angel Cooper. His legacy of kindness, humour, and love for family will be remember by his children Lynn Whalen (Sharon), Brian Whalen (Charlene), Diane Corelli (Jim), and Lisa Grant (Kevin), his grandchildren Jasmin, Erin, Matthew, A.J., Taylor, Brandon (Kaili), Hailie Fiacconi (Ryan), Riley (Sarah) and great grandchild Maverick. Predeceased by his parents Frank and Valeda Whalen and his siblings Victor (Della), Emma Evans (Stan), Helen Bailey (Leonard), Doreen Seguin (Fred), George, Agnes Artuso (Fred), and Edmund. Cherished uncle Dede/Gus of many nieces and nephews.
Dad was happiest outdoors; hunting, fishing, camping, and adventuring with family and friends, especially his brother George and sister-in-law Phyllis. Working as an electrician at Algoma Steel for over 40 years he taught his children the value of hard work, while always making time for family. When not outside Dad was an avid follower and fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs. Many will remember Dad for having the best fishing spots and being the “the master of crib” and the family “card shark”. A true Whalen he was never without a witty one liner no matter the situation and hated to lose especially when his Blue Jays lost due to the pitching of “Rotten Cheese”. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness and love as he valued family and friends above all and was always willing to help others.
A special thank you to his neighbours for always checking in and looking out for dad. Thank you to friends and family for the visits and kind gestures, your thoughtfulness will never be forgotten. Memorial donations to the SAH Cancer Care Fund or the Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
As per Dad’s wishes cremation has taken place with a graveside service to be held at a later date. Arrangements entrusted to Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Road, 705-945-7758).
We’re going to miss you Grandpa Gus, Dede, Old Poop.
