Pedro Alvarez

Obituary of Pedro Alvarez

Beloved husband, honourable father, and cherished grandfather, Peter passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 2nd, 2024, at the age of 87. Born in San Martin in the province of Leon Spain, Pedro immigrated to Sault Ste. Marie with his devoted wife, Lina and young daughter Nila, seeking a new life filled with promise and opportunity. He and Lina faced the challenges of starting anew in a foreign land with courage and an unbreakable spirit that extended over 65 years together. Their story is one of triumph over adversity, a legacy that Peter proudly passed on to his family.

Peter spent his working career at Algoma Steel, where his trusted and strong work ethic earned him the respect of his colleagues, many of which became close friends. Far from his own family, one Spanish friend, Paco Azpiroz (and Family), became what he referred to as a father figure. Many fond family memories were shared with the Azpiroz family.  Special thank you to Lourdes who provided reassurance in the final weeks.

Those who knew Pedro knew the immense joy and fulfillment he had for his farm. As a farmer, Pedro was meticulous and passionate, tending to his crops and animals with unwavering care. His farm was not just a source of food and supplemental income but a place where family memories were made, lessons were learned, and the value of perseverance was demonstrated daily.  Peter’s hands, weathered from years of labor, were a symbol of his dedication to providing for his family and nurturing the life he had built in Canada. The farm was a testament to his love for the land and his commitment to hard work, values he instilled in his daughters, Nila (Chris Grangeaud) and Elsa (Mike Ivic), both whom he proudly shared, grew to become Registered Nurses. After retirement Peter slowed down and relished his time spent with the grandchildren. He took immense pride in his four grandchildren, Sarah and Aaron (Jessica) Grandgeaud, Olivia and Johnny Ivic.

In his later years Peter lived with dementia which slowly stole him of his memories but not his spirit as shared with those closest to his care. At his side and dedicated to the end was the unwavering love of his wife Lina. Those who helped extend our quality time with dad over the years include: PSW’s Lucas, Keith, Tio, and John, Dr Docheva and the SAH Geriatrics Clinic, Palliative Care Team Dr. N. Apostle and Paramed Nurses Teresa Wyslocky and Dan Forest.

A private family service will be held. Arrangements entrusted by Northwood Funeral Home Cremation and Reception Centre (942 Great Northern Rd, 705-945-7758). Special thank you to Father Jeff for providing the Anointment of the Sick and leading the memorial of life. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. Memorial donations to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation (Algoma Geriatric Services) would be appreciated by the family.

Rest in peace, you will be deeply missed and forever loved.
