Obituary of Joe Thachyk

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our father, Joe Thachyk at the FJ Davey Home on Wednesday, July 17, 2024 at the age of 93. Loving Husband of the late Darlene (Barber). Cherished father of Carrie Ibbitson (Ed) and Cindy Spratt. Grandfather of Emily, Melissa and Kevin. Great grandfather of Valerie and Mia. Brother of the late Mary, Anne, and Pearl. He will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews.

Joe’s family came to Canada in 1929 from the Ukraine. Joe was born in Selkirk, Manitoba and lived on a modest farm and had some very challenging times. When Joe was 16, the family moved to Bar River where he met his future wife, Darlene who he married in his 20’s. Together they raised a family. Joe spent most of his working career at Algoma Steel. He loved to fish and was very gifted in the art of woodworking. He could be found tinkering in his garage for hours. Most of all, he loved to spend time with his family and friends where he could be found playing the guitar and singing. Joe will always be remembered for his sense of humour.

The family would like to thank the FJ Davey Home for their 24 hr care, where Joe resided for the last three and a half months. A heartfelt thank you to the Great Northern Retirement Home where Joe lived for 13 years and to the Sault Area Hospital for the care and compassion given to Joe.  

At Joe’s request, there will be no services held. A small graveside service at Port Findlay Cemetery will take place next month. Memorial donations to the FJ Davey Home would be greatly appreciated by the family.
