My Dad, Daniel Peter Nogalo, was born in his family home on West St. as the surprise twin brother to John. He was the youngest of 7 children born to Jure and Marija Nogalo. The family lost their father when Dad was not quite two years old. The Nogalos felt the loss of their father keenly, but persevered and remained close throughout their lives. They shared a special bond with the West End community which had colourful characters and charming locales. Dad and Aunt Florence fascinated us with stories from a different place and time. They grew up in a loving home and a caring neighborhood and enjoyed the security that both provided.
The greatest tribute my Dad made to his mother was being the father that he was. He gave his time, his energy, and his love freely. He supported each of his five children in all their pursuits. He coached some of the boys formally behind the bench and "coached" all of us informally on the car ride home. He was trying to get George to be more aggressive in the corners and said "when you go in that corner, you do everything to get that puck and if you can't do anything you EAT the puck." Peter expressed an interest in Scouts, but the troupe needed a leader, so dad volunteered without hesitation. He introduced us kids to everything- skating, baseball, skiing, whatever we wanted. The older boys were headed downtown with Dad to get outfitted for ski equipment. They knew they were in trouble when he turned right after the underpass instead of left. No Duke of Windsor boots for the Nogalo Boys, not when Pipi's was still in business. Dad was famously frugal and his quests to find a good deal knew no limits. He could often be found "sitting on the horns of a dilemma" which sounds very uncomfortable. Another Danism, "let's run it up the flag pole and see if anyone salutes" was my first lesson in consensus building. Your stock is high meant we did something good. But there were so many fluctuations in that market, I became risk tolerant.
The lessons he taught each of us are the kind that form your character. He gave each of us what we needed, when we needed it- encouragement, laughter, discipline, understanding and acceptance. We were taught that we each had a free will and must choose to do the right thing. And doing the right thing means having the courage to stand alone among our friends. He often told us "look up the word initiative in the dictionary!", advice which has stood us in good stead professionally from paper routes to executive positions. He firmly believed in education and despite his aforementioned frugality, supported all five of us as needed to attend university. He spent his lifetime learning and reading books about history, politics, and industry. He claims he attended "the school of hard knocks", but whenever I wanted to more fully understand some current event or political issue, I always asked Dad. "Who wants to hear a human interest story?", was often met with groans and eye rolling. What I wouldn't give to hear one of those stories now.
On one of our few family road trips to Southern Ontario, all seven of us were piled into our Dodge Monaco sedan. We were not too far from our destination, barreling down the 400, when Mark asked- "dad, what would happen if you turned the car off right now?". "I don't know Mark, let's find out". I wish they hadn't taken the rest of us along on their experiment. Well the muffler blew and we road into Aunt Florence's swanky, Burlington neighbourhood like the Beverly Hillbillies. But again, he was supportive, took us seriously, challenged us to ask questions and be thoughtful. Sometimes it backfires, literally.
One of the reasons we took so few road trips is the camp we had at Haviland Bay. He bought the property in the late '50's and built a bachelor's camp in the rough. Dan's Den evolved into a family camp with his wife and children surrounding him and later his grandchildren. We spent many idyllic summers soaking up the sun, exploring the Canadian wilderness around us, and non-stop swimming. Bon fires with marshmallows and scary ghost stories filled our nights. There is no way I can explain "The Whipping Game" that will sound appropriate to anyone who never begged my Dad to play it. It's not a game for the faint of heart or the heavy footed. Not many grown men would hide in the woods after dark and then chase kids through camp lots purely for their enjoyment. But that was my Dad. He was a gymnast. He was a life guard. He was a fireman. He was awesome!
I don't want to totally rewrite history with this remembrance of my father. He was the life of the party, but he could be somewhat volatile at times as well. Some of these stories are my favourites because his reactions were so absurdly disproportionate to the situation. But if in fact you came to Dad with an actual crisis- say burning the cottage down, or smashing up an unregistered, uninsured car with only a beginner's permit, he was totally calm and understanding. Dan Nogalo's School of Driving believed in creating the most high stress environment possible for your first trip out so anything after that seemed like a breeze.
Dad treated me like one of the boys so I never saw myself with limitations or restrictions because of my gender. Except when it came to my clothes! After we had a disagreement about my curfew, I went to my room to stew. We could say anything to my dad as long as it was respectful and I knew I had to appeal to his logic. I stated that at a comparable age, the boys were allowed to stay out much later than I and that was a double standard. I was feeling pretty confident in my argument. He folded down the corner of his paper and said "I know it's a double standard and that's how it should be". I stomped back upstairs to rethink my approach. But Dad could never stand conflict and so he would offer you "the hand of friendship" which you had no choice but to accept so as to avoid further conflict. He really was a friend to each of us though. If I was having a party at the camp, he would go out early to make sure everything was set up and then leave me a note with further instructions. He would always sign off his notes with "your friend, Dan".
He enjoyed his friendships with the sports group and was always saying something borderline inappropriate to liven things up. When I asked about his teasing, Diane LePage told me- "your dad gets away with murder". He was always ready with a joke, story, or honest observation. And would engage people in a way that made them feel special, that he was really listening to them. He also cherished his time spent with the St. Mary's Tamburitzans learning to play the brach. On the bus trips to the different music festivals, he was quick to share a laugh.
How could anyone who seems to have spent his youth walking on his hands more than his feet not be the life of the party? When Dad met my Mom's family for the first time, he walked the full length of the house on his hands. The Quinn Boys were sold, he was cool. Harry Quinn, who kept his feet firmly planted on the ground his entire life, was not so sure. He said to my Nana, "I don't know Annette, I don't know…." I know the Quinns have many fond memories of No-Good-Nogalo and his heckling at the horseshoe pits. Who would have thought serious Joyce would end up with such a character?
I always saw so much kindness exchanged between my parents. They seemed to know each other's strengths and weakness. Each let the other shine in their strengths and lovingly supported the other in weakness. They found joy in simplicity of everyday life with each other. Truly they were best friends. Dad would rush to the door to greet Mom after a day of teaching. He would take her coat and fuss over her. He couldn't have his morning coffee until Joyce joined him. Our home was busy and loud, fun and exciting. We had great debates around the dinner table. Dad would lead us in trivia questions or demand performances from each of us. Christmas was a magical time at 309 Whitney avenue. All the special foods, mountains of presents, and Mahalia Jackson or Bing Crosby singing carols by the fireplace are the memories of Christmas past.
He thoroughly enjoyed each of his grandchildren. He marveled at their intelligence, was entertained by their cleverness, and proud of their every achievement. He and mom were babysitting one day and at the dinner table he said "were our kids this cute?" She replied, "I'm sure they were, we were just too busy to notice". He interacts with children at their level and was so much fun. Not too long ago, my niece Sophia sincerely asked Dad "Grandpa, are you a grown up?" He looked the part, but didn't act it. He would joke, tease, pull their hair, and give them the knuckle treatment. He loved each of them and gave of himself so selflessly to them. Quinton and Dad often exchanged "Friends for life, friends forever".
The greatest legacy my father left to us is each other. I see his teasing and pot stirring in Mark along with his love of children. I see genuine kindness and a love of life in George. I see so much of my Dad in Steve's looks but also in his strength and sense of adventure. Peter has his razor sharp analysis and his affinity for the underdog. Anyone who has seen me play volleyball or hockey will recognize his drive and competitive spirit. I see his frugality in all of us, except maybe George. We are all the best of my dad. I hope he is proud of the people we have become as he was so profoundly influential in any success we have achieved. I could say more and not adequately capture how special he was or how deeply he will be missed. Dad, you can finally get off the horns of a dilemma and be at peace. Our Heavenly Father has extended to you the hand of friendship. Go in peace.
Your Friend, Michelle

Mrs. Nogalo and Family, We were very saddened to read of Mr. Nogalo’s passing. After moving back to the west end of town, I returned to the parish I was raised in. There were many parishioners that I remembered, but seeing Mr. Nogalo brought back many memories, and made me feel like I was where I belonged. We had both certainly aged over the years, but when I re-introduced myself, his smile, twinkling eyes and the warmth with which he greeted me, hadn’t changed in the least. He was truly an admirable man. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Michael and Alanna (Boyer) Kresin
