Lea Springer posted a condolence
Monday, September 9, 2013
I first met John Gray when he was working in Pickle Lake in Northern Ontario with Algoma Ore Division. He was always addressed as "John Gray" or "Mr. Gray" (never just as plain John) in a kindly, joking way. I used to watch him coming into Koval Bros. office (where I worked for a while) and before entering he would lift his cap or toque and smooth down his hair before entering with a cheery "Hello ladies!". He always addressed me as "Mrs. Springer" again in a mock formal manner. It wasn't until years later that he actually used my first name. Later when I worked for the Hudson Bay Company, John would come in, pick up a few items and as he walked out with them, would simply call out, "Charge these 'grasshoppers' to Algoma Ore!" I had to guess or ask him the next time exactly what those "grasshoppers" had been.
John and a friend of his somehow acquired an old vehicle which they proceeded to remake into a dune buggy of sorts by cutting off the entire roof and then driving it along the bush roads. Feeding apples to "Moose", the local horse who ran free in the town was also a passtime.
He often spoke of his wife, Gail, who was an Avon representative at the time, (and with whom I was very impressed by the way he described her) and of his children Russell and Stephanie. I think he surprised us all with his mention of gardening and winning prizes for his blooms.
John Gray's name and memory will long be remembered by we who knew him in that northern town as the ever-cheerful and dry-witted person, who spouted the most colourful East Coast phrases with alacrity (like that word, John?)
Farewell, Mr. Gray. Rest in Peace with all your loved ones who have gone before.
Lea

Gail, Russell and Stephanie, we just don't know what to say for your loss. John (big Jim) will be missed more than we can say. He was always sharing stories, and jokes about the FLQ. He was a good hard worker, I enjoyed helping him out with his outdoor projects. We are sure he is gabbing with Hazel, telling stories and jokes. He will be deeply missed. Eric and Kim

Dear Gail, Just had a lovely chat with Stephanie & I'm so grateful that she let me know about John's passing. I have so many warm memories of you & John. -my first babysitting job, John was emcee at my wedding, & he was so wonderful at keeping in touch with my parents & keeping dad updated on all things Algoma Steel-dad was horrible at correspondence but I know that he looked forward to Johns letters. There's so much more I could say but so little space. I will miss John's Christmas cards. Marg

My deepest condolences to Mrs. Gray, Stephanie and Russ. I fondly remember all the times that I was over at the house and yelling downstairs to Mr Gray, trying to pump him up everytime the Dodgers lost. Of course, he would yell something back up at me. Oh the good old days. Going to miss you Mr. Gray....

Russell The news we received last evening regarding the loss of your father, although expected, made us sad. The influence parents have on a child’s development can never be underestimated. Although we never met your dad, we believe decent people, like you, can only come from solid foundations. May only the warmest memories provide comfort to your whole family.
