Mary Anne Potoczny, daughter posted a condolence

In honour of my ‘most beautiful mother,’ MARIJA – MARY (ANN) – MARINOVICH-POTOCZNY
FEB. 2ND, 1929 - SEPT.17th, 2017.
Written by her loving daughter, Mary Anne Potoczny.
Born of Croatian, immigrant, parents, Ante Marinovich and Eva Sumich, Marija (Mary) Marinovich came into this world Feb. 2nd, 1929. She was
born in an area of Sault Ste. Marie known as Steelton. Mary was a
beautiful child, intelligent, kind and quiet. She attended Edith Cavell Public School. Mary grew up alongside two other siblings; her older sister Tonka
and her younger sister, Goldie. They have often been referred to as the
Marinovich Girls.
The Marinovich family worked hard and had to struggle to make ends meet. When Mary was about ten years old, her father decided to sell their
home and bought a new house in the West end of Sault Ste. Marie. This
was the beginning of the transition years for Mary and her entire family.
Unfortunately, around this time Eva, her mother, became ill and had to have surgery. With medicine being what it was in the 30’s and 40’s, Eva did not survive the operation and passed away. The entire Marinovich family
was devastated. Ante, being a typical European man of his time, was distressed as he now no longer had a wife to cook and clean. Mary, being the loving daughter that she was, left school at the age of 12 to keep
house for the family. She did this for a number of years.
It was now the 1930’s and the Soo, as well as other parts of Canada, were in the grips of the Great Depression. People were tight for money and jobs were scarce. Again Mary, being as diligent as she was, found a job as a steam presser at a local laundry,Snow White Cleaners. There she would work for a couple of years until her life would change immensely.
One day Mary came home from work. Her brother-in-law, Joe came to visit. He brought with him a young friend, Walter Potoczny. Walter was born and raised in Bayview. He was of first generation, East European descent, as was Mary. It was in my grandfather Ante’s house, that my mother met her soon to be husband. Mary and Walter were well matched. My mom said, ‘it was love at first sight.” The couple dated for about a year. They were married April 30th, 1949, Holy Rosary Church, Soo, Ont.
The wedding day was beautiful and bright, but there was a bit of wind gently blowing. Who would know what lay ahead for these two people? Who knew in what direction the wind would blow? It was the beginning of their 66 year long journey through life together.
About a year after Mary and Walter married, their first child Cathy was born. The couple had been renting a room in Ante’s house. It was now time to move to a larger dwelling. Mary and Walter purchased a half acre lot in Brookfield Subdivision. They began the construction of a story and a half,
white house at 145 Roosevelt Avenue. This would become the loving home for three more children: Walter Junior, Mary Anne and Carol.
Mary was an intelligent and loving mother who was always there for her husband and children. You would find her helping her children with their homework, listening to their needs or outside holding a piece of board for one of (Walter) Dad’s woodworking projects. Mary always put the needs
of her family first, never complaining or getting mad.
My mother was an excellent housekeeper, cook and baker. Our rooms were always cheerfully decorated and clean. A typical family meal was close to a feast. My sister Cathy and I often say how lucky we were to always have had a nice bed to sleep in and good food on the table. As a matter of
fact, we often say that we could have “afforded to lose a few pounds.”
Mary was very giving of her talents to others. Many Christmases and holidays included an invitation to Aunt Mary’s house for her scrumptious turkey, stuffing, perogies and cabbage rolls. Mary made great desserts; was very well known for her walnut bread and strudel. I will never be able to match my mother’s culinary skills, as a matter of fact, I have been a bit afraid to try.
Mary, along with her husband Walter, tried to instill Christianity and the work ethic in their children. My mother (and father) took us to mass each Sunday and spent many hours at their jobs trying to make a better life for us all. Mary was a life time member of the CWL and devoted personal time to
clean the church and dust the pews; donated many desserts and money for parish bake sales.
Religious and societal beliefs have changed much since the days of my mother. Mary was of the generation that accepted and cared for every child that God gave her. She struggled with Parkinson’s disease for years, but with the aid of my Dad and her determination, was able to cope with it all.
She lived and respected life for as long as she could, that is until God was ready to take her home. My mother was indeed a “woman of substance.”
Mary did without many things that she needed and wanted in order to give to her children. She would not buy a new coat, dress or living room carpet in order to put money away to help subsidize her children’s finances for school or things they wanted. A woman of astute means, she was always giving.
My mother was a spring and summer person. She spent many hours planting and tending to vegetable gardens that she would plant with my Dad. Her lettuce and vegetables were superior to anything one would purchase in a store. Our yard contained flower beds that were filled with
daisies, peonies and chrysanthemums. Mary had a definite “green thumb.”
Mary is mother-in-law of two. Andree is married to Walter Jr. and they reside in Ottawa. Rick is husband to her youngest daughter Carol, they live in Windsor. Mary is kindest of grandmother to: Kristin, Erin and Justin of
Thompson, Manitoba, Nadia of Ottawa and Zachary of Windsor, Ont. In the
past few years she has become a great-grandmother to: Brie, Annabella, Nicholas, Brook and Macgillvary of Thompson and Henry of Windsor.
My mother is an extremely loved and popular lady among family and friends. God created a beautiful person as in her. I know that I do not have, nor will ever match her in virtue, even though I was named after her. All I can say is, “Thanks Mom, for giving me so much and taking such an interest in my upbringing. I know that I wouldn’t have half of what I have today, nor have achieved so many things, had it not been for your ever giving support and prayers. I thank you and pray that you are with Dad in heaven, forever, Amen.”

On Sunday September 17th I lost my beloved grandmother. She was one special lady and the loss of her is felt deeply by many, even though she lived a full life. The love of a grandma is unique. God must have given grandmothers to us to make our lives more complete, to make us well rounded and better human beings. She played a big part in my childhood and I can remember so many times coming home from school and her always having a snack ready for me and sitting in the kitchen and tasting the dishes, she prepare with special love. She taught me a lot about love and the meaning of family.. She has never been just ‘my grandmother’, but my guardian, my friend and my inspiration. Still, we can’t believe my lovely Grandma was taken away from us . We will miss our Grandmother, but her spirit and strength, lives on in each of us and in the lives that she touched. She lives on in me and in all those who have been touched by the love, strength, wisdom, and beauty of her soul. I love you grandma, you truly were a special, special woman! You may have passed on, but your memories would always live on within us. Thank you for your sacrifices, your care and your love and everything that you have done for me. I know you are in a much better place with grandpa now.
We'll always remember you grandma because there will never be another one to replace you in our hearts and the love we will always have for you. I wouldn't want anyone but you, that's why I'm so grateful, that life picked you for me.
