We are very saddened to hear of John's recent passing. In addition to being a close friend at Queen's and part of the Queen's University bands, we also have many shared memories and good times together - road trips, football games, numerous social functions at Montreal street, and as a piper at weddings. . 3-J was with me the day Lisa and I met at football game at Concordia - in his full kilted pipe band regalia. He and his family hosted us on our cross Canada drive - providing a much appreciated place to stay. I remember the night that he acquired his unique nick-name ( at the Queen's student pub, he ordered 3 jugs of draft, no glasses - thus "3-J" or "Threej") he was a part of our life. He will be missed. I was so very saddened to hear of John's recent passing. We were members of the Queen's University pipe band for four years, 1979-83, and shared many adventures, road trips and football games. Although I had not seen him at Homecoming for several years, I always looked for him (as did many other fellow Bandsies). He was affectionately known to us as "3-J" (not quite sure where that came from), but there's probably a story there. I will always remember him for his kindness, compassion and terrific sense of humour. RIP 3-J . . . gone too soon. You will be missed and always loved.

I received the news of 3J’s passing from Patty Wilson and was stunned. That, in essence,was the general reaction from everyone. I spent most of the next day in a limbo of tears and uncontrolled giggling as memories flooded back. John adopted me at Queen’s and was sort of the older brother...I never wanted. Time spent on Division and Montreal were amazing: the Bands stories are untolled. I remember a picture of the two of us on a roadtrip to Montreal, spooned up together on a hotel bed and fast asleep. In kilts. He came down to Sarnia to pipe in the opening of the first games, and made my dad’ s day. (John forgot his glen...), and contacted me through the police when he was coming to run a marathon a few years back. We met at a pub, and it was as if no time had passed since we last shared a pint: THAT says it all. He was my friend.
